disks say they have burned correctly but haven't

I am having a problem burning DVDs using nero. It isn't just on one of my computers either, its on both. I am using i think the newest version of Nero (but surely all recent versions should correctly burn DVDs?). In one machine I have an LG super-combo 12x dual layer drive. Quite often when I burn DVDs using this drive the process will complete and say it was successful but the finished disk will be defective in some way. For instance I just burnt a disk for a mate of mine and the last bit of data on the disk was unreadable. The media it was on was Datawrite 4x DVD-R. I very often have problems with Bulkpaq disks, the bright orange DVD-R ones. These seem to fail almost 100% of the time.
My Datasafe 8x DVD+Rs almost always seem to work.
The PC in question is a 3.2ghz Athlon 64bit with WinXP pro.
Sometimes I do things on it while it is burning a disk, but then thats what buffer under-run protection is for right?
    Synopsis:
Disks say they have successfully completed burn process in nero, but then the data is corrupt in some way.

    To find out if it is in the burning process or in the playing process you have your problem - do this test;

Download www.dvdinfopro.com (freeware) insert one of your burned disc and selelct the option "Test your media for CRC read errors" - if you only get green dots you know that your burning is ok and it is the player that causes the problem. If you get any read dots - you know something else.

sorry I didn't explain: i KNOW it isn't the player cos I have tried these disks in different players with the same errors coming up. I know something is going wrong with the burning process, I just want to find out what.
Are there settings in nero that will affect whether a burn completes correctly?
Can a buffer under-run still cause a write error even with buffer under-run protection enabled?
Will CPU or hard disk usage by another program during a burn cause a write error?
What effect do the various ISO and Jolliette settings have on the readability of the disk?

If you KNOW that it is not the player it must be the burning that don't work.

        1. Get better discs with higher quality
        2. Update your firmware
        3. Update your Nero

        1. Are you using the default - it shouldn't result in an error.
        2. If the buffer gets empty it will result in a burn error.
        3. Not if you don't get a buffer under-run.
        4. You should use the default settings to get the most compatible discs burned.

"but surely all recent versions should correctly burn DVDs?"

Then I can't understand why they are releasing new updates... Even Ahead admits that there still could be bugs in the software. The handle of USB2 devices is such a problem.

With default settings I'm refering to the settings shown in the guides found on this page: www.dvdshrink.info

thanks for the help thus far.
So a buffer underrun can still occur in nero even with buffer underrun protection enabled?
In that case if a buffer underrun occurs why would the disk say that writing completed successfully?

In theory it shouldn't - in real world anything can happen.

Even if you have a burning that has ended with "writing completed successfully" - does not mean that there could not be any errors on the burned disc. If you had tried the suggestion to check how well your burns really are you would have knew the answer.

"Sometimes I do things on it while it is burning a disk"

Regardless of "buffer underrun protection", this may very well be the cause of your problem(s)...
