You are correct.
First, you need to convert the .avi files to compatible .mpeg format by using a program called TMPGEnc.
Second, you then need to run the .mpeg files that you created with TMPGEnc through a different program called TMPGEnc DVD Author (A different program than TMPGEnc) to create a compliant DVD.
Both of these programs can be downloaded via the links at the bottom of my post.
Good Luck! -
1) Load the original .AVI video file into VirtualDub (or one of its many variants) or NanDub
2) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "File Information"
3) Post (here) EVERYTHING you see (BOTH video and audio information), or post a screen capture .jpg of the information boxComment

Have you tried TMPGEnc? (not the Author)
According to http://www.videohelp.com/vcd your file info is well below that of VCD let alone DVD. I'd be surprised if the output would run on a standalone player.
I could be wrong but your screenshot is very similar to another poster who was told this earlier. This isn't a learning curve ... this is b****y mountaineering!Comment
