Splitting "headache"?

Hi,

I've been spending hours and hours trying to split TROY using IfoEdit. The Guide shows an option"Remove Seamless Br.". TROY has two versions on the DVD, one English and one French. When I check the box to remove seamless branching so that the lanquages don't overlap, once I get to the point where I click on Split It a screen pops up with several files checked and offers me the oportunity to "Strip It"!? If I do this then the files won't burn because of a file reallocation error. This is not covered in the Guide. Please help.

Are you sure there's two versions and not just two languages? This would be unusual. The only time there are 2 versions is when there's a widescreen version and a fullscreen version.

The languages are muxed into the title PGC - all of them (up to 8). Sometimes, you will see a second title that exactly replicates the first in terms of VOB and Cell IDs used. This can be used, for example, for director's comments, which can branch off to other bits of the disk (non-seamlessly of course) to illustrate what they are talking about (in almost all cases, the director's comments are muxed into the title as above).

The strip it option is simply to remove a language. I would not do anything about the seamless branching. I think it's a bit of a smokescreen. But, can you post a pic of your IfoEdit summary for that VTS please. I want to look at the VC IDs.

If there are VOBIDs to remove, perhaps doing that first will help, followed by the split.

Don't worry - we'll get you there; I've done lotsa splits, all successful, OK?

Thank you Les,

The Strip It option came after the Seamless Branching option. I'd tried to split the movie without this but the two lanquages (yes, you are correct, not two versions) overlapped!? After doing the branching the files played using Power DVD but would give the File Reallocation error when I tried to burn with both Nero 6 and DVD Decrypter. I went ahead and burned an image from Image Tool but now have a coaster in the waste can.

Below is a lot of info. Not sure if this is what you want. Sorry to be so bothersome. I'll have to send three posts to accomodate all the stuff.

Hi Marcia. This is what's happening here.

Title 1 and title 5 share much the same things. See, they both have VOB IDs 2 and 3, while title 1 also has VOBID 1?

Title 1 has an extra 1 min and 33 seconds tacked on to the start. Dunno what that is, maybe some intro in a foreign language. It might be interesting for you to watch title 1 in a software player (IfoEdit's will be good enough) to see if you need that title at all.

Obviously, the seamless branching occurs at VOBID 2.

Now, if you decide not to keep the start of title 1, you can actually strip VOBID 1 out with IfoEdit. Titles 1 and 5 will be the same. This is irrelevant. Then there would be no seamless branch to get in your way. But, it looks like IfoEdit has kept things nicely.

Titles 2, 3, 4 and 6 appear to share cells with title 1 (see, they all start at sector 19?). Not sure what these are, but I bet on the original disk (unsplit) they don't say 0 cells. My best guess is that they are all VOBID 1 and last 1 min 31 secs. These titles, if not present, can give trouble (unless we bypass them), and so should be on disk 1.

Otherwise, disk 1 looks OK - it has the first 24 chapters of 44. Disk 2 should have the other 20. You can keep the French in, it doesn't matter - the whole lot will comfortably fit on 2 disks.

Do you have Disk 2's info and that of the unsplit disk?

Hi Les,

Ooo, this is all so technical to me. Sorry. I'm not sure what to send and what not to from disc 2.
Please let me recap what happened. I first stripped, then split the movie TROY. (maybe someone could try doing the same?). There were no reallocation errors. However, as per the guide, I watched the files in Power DVD. What I mean by 'overlapped' is that the introductory text in the first 3 minutes of the stripped VTS_01_1.VOB show English, then a second or two later French, then English, then Spanish. The movie pixelates and jerks. After the first 3 minutes, the sound smooths out, but the picture in ALL the VOBs jerks and jumps about every 15 seconds.

It was after this that I resplit using the branching option.

I've deleted everything, then stripped again, then split again. I've done this four times. This has taken many hours. Still, the overlap and jerkiness continue in both the stripped files and the two disc files.

Is there a step-by-step process I can use to eliminate this problem? I don't want to waste discs...nor time, yours or mine.

Maybe, as I'd suggested, someone might try to split this particular movie and see if they have the same problem.

I finally used DVD Shrink and made a disc of the main title (there are two of them, both more than 7G). I did the first title. The compression ratio is just under 62%. The movie plays fine and in only one lanquage with no jerkiness. However, The quality just isn't what I'd like. That's why I'm trying to do two discs.

If you back up only title 1, the compresion may get to an acceptable level (but I doubt it, the VOBIDs are shared, as we saw before).

Isn't it obvious that the stripped files are defective, thus, resulting in IfoEdit mimmicking such?

You sent me to a post about DVD Shrink. Shouldn't someone get the movie TROY, strip it with DVD Decrypter, then see if these 'master' files have the 'defects' that I've gotten?? Repeat: I used DVD Shrink AFTER my frustrations with DVD Decrypter and then the obvious results with IfoEdit.

I'm not asking about DVD Shrink. I'm trying to SPLIT the movie TROY with IfoEdit after stripping with DVD Decrypter. The split will only reflect what the stripping does, don't you think?

Please...somebody get an original copy of TROY, strip it with DVD Decrypter, then examine the VOB files one-by-one using a viewer. If you get the same result, pulleeezz...let this non-tech lady know, OK?

Did you get any errors during the DVD Decrypter rip? And, does the original disk play OK? If so, I doubt there's anything wrong with the rip. And, as I said, your Disk 1 looks fine. Does it play?

I just read your first post again. You are trying to burn with bl**dy Nero, aren't you??? Guess what? You have a file called VIDEO_TS.VOB which is 0 bytes. Delete it!!!! And do a Get VTS Sectors in IfoEdit.

Now, it is not absolutely necessary to have this file, but Nero whinges and bleats about it and gives you a mysterous "file allocation error". It then asks if you want to continue. Simply say, Yes and burn the disk (use an RW for the time being). Try it! I bet your disk 1 comes out OK.

No, I hadn't actually gone quiet. I had to get the orginal DVD back to its owner. And I'd gotten so frustrated that I had to just walk away for awhile. The DVD that I made with DVD Shrink, although at 62%, works pretty well. I'm going to do a three hour movie later and try to split it. I think it will be OK. Will let you know.

Thanks so much for your help and time. I now know about that .VOB that NERO doesn't like. Of course Decrypter didn't like it either, evidently.

Had you stated this in your intial post to this thread, I'm sure "blutach" and any of the other regular posters here would have told you that discussion of anything to do with media that you haven't purchased/don't own is a violation of the rules of these forums...
