Time to buy a DVD Burner...

I have been backing up my DVDs to DivX but now the prices for DVD Burners have dropped quite alot.
Just need some help on a few terms and ideas:

    1) What is firmware?
2.1)When should the price drop for dual layer media?
2.2) Should I get a burner with dual layer?
3.1) Whether or not my backed up media will play on my stand alone player/ps2 depends on the media rather than the burner right?
3.2) Recomended media? Go with good brands?
    4) Whats the difference between DVD-R and DVD+R?
    5) What burner do you recomend? (if its possible to say) I hear there are alot of DVD burners that are almost identical but with different manufacturers...is this true?

    Thanks alot,

    Sam

SaaaaM, go here as it should answer most of your questions:

    "What is firmware?"

    2.
"When should the price drop for dual layer media?
    "
How are we suppose to know this?

    3.
"Should I get a burner with dual layer?"
Personal preference actually although, why not? They are about the same price as a single layer burner.

    4.
"Whats the difference between DVD-R and DVD+R?"
    Nothing really, except compatibility issues.

    5.
"What burner do you recomend? (if its possible to say) I hear there are alot of DVD burners that are almost identical but with different manufacturers...is this true?"
I have the Sony DRU-510A. I have heard "Sony" and "Lite On" are both made by Sony.

I live in spain so the prices are a bit more expensive than in the US or UK but do you know this burner?
          Philips DVD-R/+RW R1625K 16x DL for 74 euros??

I'm not up on all the new writers that are coming out, mine works and thats all I care about. lol

You can always go to http://www.videohelp.com/dvdwriters and enter in the required information and search for it, it should come back with what is and what is not compatible with it and may have some reviews by people who bought that writer.
