pioneer dvr108

I recently purchased a Pioneer DVR108 recorder and have had very good luck burning dvd's and such. I see people talking about the firmware versions they have and such, and I found an update firmware patch for it on pioneer's site. Anyway, when I try to update is gives me a "Available target is not found" error message. First off, how do I find out which firmware mine has? Secondly, does the updater need to be in a certain spot on my hd? It would be nice to take advantage of the 16x capabilty.
