Newbie desperate for help

TIA to begin

I record tv shows on my dvd recorder. I want to be able to edit the commercials, put several episodes together on a disc, create menus and break, and then burn back to a dvd.

I have read many how to guides, these forums and others, and honestly...I'm overwhelmed with info I'm sure I simply don't need to know to do what I want to do.

I have an internal Sony 16x dvd+/-rw double layer drive, 48X cd read speed and 16x dvd read speed. atapi/e-ide interface, from newegg. No software came with it, winXP installed it with no questions.

Can someone give me a walk through on how to do these things? Or a site to get to to learn?

Not sure what format your DVD recorder is recording the shows in but, you can try this method:

1) Use "TMPGEnc" (or "TMPGEncPlus") to convert the .AVI (DivX-compressed or otherwise) to compliant MPEG2-for-DVD format - You can use "TMPGEnc's" DVD wizard/template to accomplish this.

2) Use "TMPGEnc DVD Author" (a different program than "TMPGEnc") to easily create the required additional DVD files and structure (and chapters and a menu, if you wish).


**If the combined file size of the DVD "package" written to your hard drive is greater than 4.37Gb, use DVD Shrink to compress it down to fit on your recordable media.


If your operating system (O/S) is either Win2000 or WinXP, TMPGEnc DVD Author can also burn your DVD. Otherwise, use NERO to burn in "DVD-Video" mode - Tutorial Located here on how to do this: http://forum.digital-digest.com/show...453#post221453

Simply use "TMPGEnc DVD Author" to easily accomplish everything you've listed.

Thank you for the responses I downloaded TMPGEnc DVD Author, and was able to view the tv show I had recorded. I was able to edit it the way I wanted as well.

Then things got hairy. I saved the edited movie to a folder. Then I tried to burn that to a different dvd. I was able to accomplish that, but unfortunately, I cannot view that burned DVD on my DVD player. I can view that burned DVD on my computer.

I have a folder that contains 2 other folders: one folder contains video ts.vob, the other vts 01 0.VOB.

The other folder contains 2 sub folders: One of those sub folders has: video ts.bup, video ts.ifo, video ts.vob, vts 01 0.bup, vts 01 0.ifo, vts 01 0.vob, vts 01 1.vob. The other sub folder labeled Audio TS is empty.


None of these extentions make any sense to me whatsoever

When I tried to play the dvd in my player, it read it as a data cd, and clearly will not play it.

Anymore help please? I'm comfortable with everything up to the point of burning and viewing .

How are you burning?

You should end up with two folders only. An Audio_ts folder which will be empty and a Video_ts folder with your ifos, bups and vobs

It sounds like you didn't avail yourself to TMPGEnc DVD Author's built-in burning program immediately after editing. If you had, it wouldn't have allowed you to burn anything other than the following two folders (referred to by Mig$y): "VIDEO_TS" and (empty) "AUDIO_TS"...

You are right, setarip, I didn't burn immediately. I wanted to compile several clips onto one cd to burn.

However! The good news is that I eventually did accomplish (in a limited way) my goal. I used Nero to burn, and I can view that cd on all my dvd players. Also, I realized that the media I had bought (dvd R-) was the culprit. Once I used a R+ media, all was well.

Anyone want 100 blank r- discs, or do I do I need to have a very large cocktail party?
