    Verbatim Discs

I had a spindle of 50 Verbatim Data Life disks that worked like a charm. I ran out and purchased another Verbatim spindle and they are giving me trouble. I ran both disks thru a Disk Identifier program and they are made by 2 different companies. The old ones were made by Rikon and the new ones are made by Mitsubishi. Is this normal. i thought Verbatims were good DVD's to use for PS2 backups. Can anybody shed some lite on this matter. I am very frustrated with this right now.

    Wrong Mfg

sorry, the old Verbatims were made by Ritek and the Mfg ID says RitekG03. The new Verbatims are made by Mitsubishi and ID says MCC 03RG20. Again anybody that can shed some light on this would be great.

Nowadays, media manufacturing can be outsourced to several different factories ("contractors" or sub-contractors"), so that the "label" of "Verbatim", "SONY", etc. means virtually nothing.

One can only hope that the primary/"label" company values its reputation and requires the actual manufacturer to maintain the quality users have come to expext of their products...

        So you are saying...

I have been screwed. I trusted a company. Verbatim is not what they used to be? Is that what you are saying. I have 23 16X disc to waste. i have another 8X Verbatims coming. I hope those are more like my old ones than the 16X that I just purchased today. Can you name a brand that is still good today? I read on this site that the 8X were still OK. Do you know it that is true. i would hate to have 73 discs that I can't use.

Gregthree, you're mentioning the speed factors of the blanks.
before you go throwing/wasting them, try burning at 2x or 4x speed

Can you help me out with changing the write speed on DVDD. I use DVDD to write the ISo file. On the ISO Write screen it has an option to change the write speed. I have set it to 1X but when it burns it burns at a higher rate. Is there another way to set the burn speed down.

Open up DVD Decrypter and in the settings -> tab Device - set your desired burning speed. Close the program and then it will use the settings next time you autoburn with DVD Shrink.

I am going with the idea that the Verbatim 16X DVD-R are crap. I just copied NCAA 2004 onto one of the new discs with pausing and jumping. The game was flawless on the older
verbatims. Unfortunetly, I have another set of 8X coming. I hope they are not from the same ink. If they are then I will have lots of coasters unless some one hear would want them.

@ Gregthree: Sure you have the latest firmware installed for your burner?

Verbatim corp is a division of Mitsubishi Chemical Corp so it is more likely, though not certain that they will end up being from Mitsubishi.....

So then it is true then that the Verbatim is not as consistant of a product as they used to be. So it is time to try a different brand.

I have. That is why I think it is the media. I am using 2X that is the slowest it will burn. I am having trouble with Scorpion King which I got to work on a different verbatim. Shrek2 starts to load but then locks up. Have used the CD loader like explained. Nascar 2005 is jumpy. Shrek2 won't work on the older Verbatim either. Nascar 2005 I am in the middle of reburning onto a 4X Verbatim so I will know its consequences in a few minutes. All my burns are done at the slowest speed possible.
