I noticed on the last backup I did, it said it was burning at 12x. I was using a Memorex 8x DVD+R blank. It seems to have burned ok, but I only watched the previews. I'm pretty new to this stuff, and I'm wondering how it was burning at 12x when the media was only 8x? I used DVD Shrink and Nero to rip and burn.
burning at 12x with 8x media

From lurking around this forum I have noticed that the members with the most success all seemed to burn around 4x or lower, but hey, whatever works for you... -
"it said it was burning at 12x."
NERO is actually telling you what the "apparent" maximum burn rate is for the media, despite the fact that it's rated at 8X by the manufacturer. Chances are, if you check the amount of time required for the burn of a full DVD, it wil be between 7 and 8 minutes - which means it actually burned at 8X, despite the indicated 12x burn speed.
This can actually cause problems occasionally, as the lead out may not be properly performed.
If you find this to be the case, I'd suggest you manually use NERO to burn - and select the burn speed that's safest (to me that means 2X or 4X), or if you prefer, up to 8X...Comment

At the risk of repeating myself - burn with DVD Decrypter. It has a drop down box allowing you to set the speed on its Write tab.
Look here - under How do I burn, near the end of the thread.

And consequently have problems with.
As we know, DVD Shrink can't rip all DVDs and there are more complaints about Nero than DVDXCopy!
Answer:
1. Rip with DVD Decrypter
2. Shrink with DVD Shrink
3. Burn with DVD Decrypter (or even better still, ImgToolsClassic)

Thanks for all the help guys. I figured it out last night. I unchecked the "burn with nero" box, and did a manual burn, setting the speed at 4X. So far I have backedup 6 DVD's with no big problems. I think I'll stick with DVD Shrink and Nero for the time being.
And I'm sorry I posted this in the wrong forum. Thanks for moving it for me.Comment
