It's always hard to recommend a burner.

The Sony is a Lite-On rebadge. Would be easier to buy a Lite-On direct - always problems with firmware updates for Sonys. With the Lite-On you can patch your own firmware. Lite-Ons can be tweaked alot which is nice. Also a cheap burner.

When it comes to patched firmwares - there is a lot of goodies for the NEC 3520.

Pioneers are just overpriced - at least in my country.

I'm going to pick up a 3520 for myself next week.

Pioneer burners are "rock solid" performers and are quite reasonably priced in the U.S.

This is a question that is actually banned at doom9, but we allow it here.

It is so subjective. I've got an LG4081B (which serves me very well) and it would cost me less than A$95 (US$65) to upgrade to, say, a 4163B dual layer capable. Very tempting. But LG is not all that big on firmware upgrades and the "underground community" has developed more goodies for LiteOn and NEC.

Check for bitsetting and, importantly, the abilty to deal with media that works on your players. Click on burner/media compat in my sig.

I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the right place but ---

I'm looking for an external DVD burner and I can get a good deal on a Pioneer S806 - about 110 Euro. But I see the region locks in after 5 changes. Is this standard for all burners? If I get this - which is the best program to work around this. And, if I move the drive around will I have to run the fix on every computer

I have a NEC 3520, running modded firmware, and burning 4X TYG01's at 12.5X with excellent results. Burned 400+ with it and it's still running strong. I really do love it, highly recommend it.

I have the unpopular Philips 8631 burner....... everyone seems to have a problem with it but me!!!! I'm the lucky one! All the programs work with mine and I never had trouble with this drive! My brother bought the same computer and he never had trouble with his! Soooooo with all the discussions about this terrible drive that everyone is having I and my brother are burning to our hearts content! But I must say....... the glowing reports about the NEC 3520 is something not to ignore!
