Well i ended up getting the 3540a by nec which is a nice burner scared to see what the firmware update will offer to it and it burns using the sony 8x +r at 16 x speed that i don't mind at all

I am pulling out my only non-nec burner and replacing with another 3520a.

The nec with new modded firmware rips a heavyduty dvd-9 faster than my
previous champ, LITE-ON COMBO SOHC-5236K
Handles problematic media much better than the LG's or Plextor's.
