Frisbee City All of a Sudden

I am using a compaq laptop Intel (R) Celeron (R) M processor 1.30 Ghz 480 GB Ram with an external mad dog 16X dvd burner as well as a seagate 200 GB external hard drive in order to store iso images to back up my collection. I have had no problems backing up my dvd's in the past, but suddenly I am getting frisbee's galore. I use Verbatim media and have hardly ever had frisbees until recently. Here is the error message that I get. It encodes fine but screws up during the actual burning process.
Can ANYONE help a brother out!!?

Read this thread, regarding Verbatim labeled media:

That version of Nero is buggy. Upgrade to the latest version of Nero asap. - http://www.nero.com/us/nero-up.php

When I went to the update firmware page it told me that it was dangerous for me to do so unless I was an expert at risk to my burner. Is there an pdate firmware step by step guide?

Before doing ANYTHING else, simply try using a different brand of media - such as Ritek/Ridata or Maxell...

These are the steps if you want to do the firmware update: Shouldn't be any problem to perform it.

                1. Close down all other programs
                2. Don't have any discs in your burner
                3. Run the downloaded .exe file/Flash it
                4. Restart your PC

Go for Ritek's better brands such as Ridata or Ridisc. Stay away from 8x G05 media at the moment. The quality of some G05 discs are not up to the usual Ritek standard. I would go for Ridisc 4x G04 - R's or even 2x G03 - R's if you can find them.

I have also heard stories in tha past that some Verbatims sold are fakes. I don't know if that still happens.

Cynthia, thank you for the guide. This may be a really silly question, but since my burner is external, do I need to have it connected before I update the firmware?

Yes, the firmware is located inside the burner.

Re Ritek/Maxell - both are excellent media (perhaps Maxell has the "edge" but not by much). Buy the one that suits your burner AND players. When you find something that works, buy them with your ears pinned back.

Re firmware upgrades - those warnings are on all sites - I haven't seen anybody break their burner yet. Most burners can be reflashed if the firmware doesn't take.

                          Regards

The Japanese make of Taiyo Yuden are proabably the best discs available, However, they are more expensive than most other discs (usually 2x more). There are fakes about so care needs to be taken when ordering them.

                              I saw that Taiyo Yuden DVD-R - 8X - 4.7GB are $22.99 for a 50 pack and $34.49 100 pack at www.meritline.com. However, they are much more over at www.neato.com ($32.86 for 50 pack; $139.00 for 100 pack). That's a pretty wide variance
