Thanx blutach, I'll try to split it earlier. Trouble is it's the first chapter! You get lots of extra's which in a way has caused more of a headache. If it was a standard movie it would be fine, I think I'll have to accept the extra's (with menu functionality on one disk) and then the movie (with no menu) on disk to. That's provided it will all fit.

I'm wasting disks really cause I'm not testing the split point before burning. I haven't tested were the split is cause I don't know how it's done. I don't know how it's done cause I haven't tried. So in a nutshell I guess I've been lazy and it's my own fault. I'll look into how you test were the split is (with DVDFab), at which point the movie ends on the first disk. I should have researched this 15 disks ago! I know how to do it with shrink using the reauthor etc but haven't tried it with DVDFab.

Not sure in reality it's worth investing in any more DVD+R DL's, given the price of them compared to DVD5's it doesn't seem worth the money. I believe DVD-R DL's will be out this year anyway?

2. Eliminate dopey extras - use VobBlanker or PgcEdit.

3. Yes, -R DLs are on the horizon, but they won't support bitsetting.

Here's another idea:

If you only want some extras and don't want a menu, then reauthor with DVD Shrink using NO COMPRESSION (make the main movie the first thing you drag over to the reauthor window then follow with the extras you want to keep). Click backup. Ignore any warnings and make your hard drive the output. This will make a new project on your hard drive, from which you can split to 2 DVDs.

Blutach, just one last question. I managed to download both VobBlanker and PgcEdit, also got the guide you compiled regarding adding the menu's back with PgcEdit.

Anyway my question, will it be possible for me to retain menu functionality if I use VobBlanker or PgcEdit for both disks. So I can choose what to put on disk one and retain the menu access. I can choose what to put on disk 2 and retain menu access?

I'll be spending my Saturday evening messing with this. If it's possible to do then I'm well happy.

There is a way to keep the menus on both disks:

1. Use VobBlanker to blank out what you want from disk 1 - output folder "Disk 1".
2. Redo - Use VobBlanker to blank out the rest - output folder "Disk 2".
3. The menus will work - if you click a blanked title, it will just return to the menu.
4. Burn both projects with PgcEdit.

A good idea is to keep as much of the main movie on D1 with the rest of it and all the extras on D2. At the same time, you can blank out for good, dopey studio logos, FBI warnings etc.

What my intention was, have all the extra's on one disk (with the menu). Have the movie on the second disk (with the menu).

That way for one disk you access the extra's via the menu, the other disk is chapter selection also via the menu. All nice and neat.

The fact that you've told me it's possible is enough for me to get stuck in. Can't wait to give it a go, suppose it's a bit nerdy. Just as well the missus is out on Saturday, she hates me spending time on the computer, like she's jealous of all the attention it gets or something. Best get some RW's I guess.

Note: On most occasions, you will need to split the main movie somewhere. Only if it is < 4.37Gb (including menus, BUPs and IFOs) will you be able to get away with it all on one disk.

One other point. You will probably need VIDEO_TS.VOB on both disks (if it is present on the original). Much of the time, this is just FBI warnings and studio/authoring house promos and you can blank the lot. But sometimes you can't blank it all. Luckily VobBlanker allows you to blank on a cell by cell basis. This is very handy if you wish to omit some stuff from a VOB (e.g aforementioned junk) but retain others (e.g. real menus).

Here is an illustrated guide from the VobBlanker site.

You strictly don't need the last bit about cell commands, it just makes the 2nd disk start a bit quicker. Good experience though.

Cheers Les, I'll update you Monday. I take you point about the movie, it's probably unlikely that I'll be able to retain it all on one disk.

jmet - RW's are taken care of, they'll be getting hammered on Saturday.

I'll just play around, see what happens, I enjoy tinkering (provided I know what I'm doing). I'll no doubt have half a dozen questions on what I've done wrong on Monday (hope you'll have a clear head after the wkend).

Cheers blutach, you have taught me much oh wise one. I have already checked for compatibility/placed an order. With any luck the disks will arrive tomorrow, if not Monday. I've got a few Ritek left and I can always use those for now. Compatibility isn't something I considered until I posted this thread earlier this week.

Ok, I couldn't wait till Saturday evening and made a start. I'm stuck already! Everything was going well. I'm trying to use VobBlanker, I blanked out the 2 last cells to bring the size down to under 4.7gb (well under). I clicked apply (no problems there). For some reason the "Process" button is greyed out. It's like the last stage and I can't do it. I was gunna attach a couple of screen dumps but I can't seem to do that on the thread now. Hope I'm making some sense. My obsession has begun
