TDK Disclaimer is... frightening.

Hello everyone!

My first post here... I've been using TDK blank media for most of my life. I find the quality impeccable.

I have an NEC 1100a burner with the current firmware, etc.


Here's the thing: I don't have a problem. I've yet to burn a coaster (knock on wood), and I'm about 60+ burns in. However, while waiting for a rip to complete one evening, I was reading the wrap around flap that comes with TDKs DVD+Rs.

They were a package of 8x discs, every burn perfect. However, TDK claims that using these discs in drives that burn below 8x will cause possible "damage to media and hardware."

I tried searching the forums for this, but found nothing. Has anyone experienced anything bizarre along these lines? Is there a meaning here I'm missing?

I certainly haven't experienced any problem buring disks at a lower than their maximum rated speed. Weird.

don't believe everything you read.....could be a set-up. perhaps they want you to burn a 8x, knowing that 100% success rate is not likely (but close), and inturn you will be back to buy more discs?

I had a feeling it was something like that... maybe even a tactic to sell higher speed burners? I know TDK makes hardware as well.


Seriously, if one were to purchase a 25 or 50 pack of these 8x DVD+Rs, just read the inside of the "wrap around flap" and see for yourself... very odd.

yes, with a pack of discs i purchased 2 years ago, the warning said not to use pencil. 2 years later the disc is still mint. you can usually tell what warnings to pay attention to, then throw that warning label right in the bush where it belongs...

What makes it perhaps even more unusual is the fact that the packaging of most brands of burnable DVD media indicate the media to be rated at "From 1X to 8X" - in essence, telling you that some (or all) of individual discs can be or may HAVE to be burned at a lower speed - therefore, whether explicitly or by inference, telling you that it's perfectly alright to burn at a lower speed...

i think that for most people that are new to burning DVD's the 1x-8x indicates that you MAY burn lower than 8x if so desired by oneself, not that a case may arise where it is absolutely needed no matter what. this i think is later understood, when they spend more time with this hobby.
