DVD-R not able to open blank disks

Useing Windows XP SP2 I incert blank dvd-r and click on the drive properties and it says 0 bytes. The drive description also changes from DVD-RW Drive (E) to CD Drive (E) Shrink thinks the drive is empty and tells me to insert a blank dvd. Bottom line... I can't burn dvd anymore!

just last week I burned the new Exorcist movie so I know for sure this burner works but it is only a 4x burner and I wanted to swap it for a 16x burner and when I did the swap the new DVD-R did not install properly and gave me the trouble with not being able to detect the blank dvd-r available space.
I went back to the old burner thinking I had just grabbed a bad one and put my old one back in and it is doing this as well
My burner used to burn dvds just fine
I have burned dvds on this burner and never had a bad burn this thing is solid state.

I simply think this has somthing to do with service pack 2.

any help or speical attention would be welcome.

The drive is not recognising the blank media. Is it exactly the same media (not just the same brand but the same media code?) - see What's my media ID & firmware in my sig.

Also, make sure your burners' firmware are up to date. See link in my sig.

When did you install SP2? Have you ever had a good burn with SP2?

SP2 has been noted at these forums to be the cause of several different problems - and UNinstalling it has been noted to resolve some of the problems.

so when useing dvd decrypter and haveing a blank 4.7g dvd+r in the dvd r tray decrypter says disk empty.
when I lay the exorcist in the dvd r tray dvd decrypter gives me the info on the exorcist disk but no info on a blank disk.
The media I am useing is the same burnable media from the same 10 pack that I have burned dvds from in the past (the Exorcist)

Firmware is up to date.
dvd-r 4x was installed 2/04 and sp2 was installed 1/05 I had aprox. 3 out of 3 good burns since installing sp2.



I plan to uninstall SP2 becuse I have just been waiting for somthing like this to happen.


I read somwhere on the microsoft website about the new OS being able to copy and burn dvds. @#$%#$$%&#

Cynthia was talking to jmet, so nothing to worry about (he had published a picture with his full name on it - now deleted).

If you did have good burns with SP2 I would think it's not SP2's fault. I run SP2 with no problems as do many others. However, there have been plenty of people reporting issues with SP2. Give the unistallation a try and let us know how it turned out.

BTW: What is the media code of your media and your burner model? You should check out compatibility - see my sig.
