getting data from unfinalised DVDs

help! i need a program that can get VOB files from discs that were recorded with a standalone recorder but not finalised, preferably free

already tried ISObuster but had no luck. i know the data is there and ive actually read the files with CD/DVD Diagnostic, but i have to buy the program to get them off....

please suggest something! thanks!

You might try the FULLY functional free trial version of (shareware) WinHex...

thanks for the suggestion, setarip. i still havent tried it with a DVD burner, since my personal comp doesnt have 1, but i downloaded it anyway to get an idea of it and it seems to be able to do a lot more than simply scan a DVD and recover data (like CD/DVD Diagnostic)....

if possible, could you give me a few quick pointers to get me started, relevant to my situation. im guessing i need to "Open Disk" then run some data recovery procedure, but "File Recovery by Name/Type" apparently only apply to HD drives. i cant test any of this now, cause my burner-less comp cant even see the discs....

and if anyone has any more suggestions, please enlighten me. i have to go to an Internet cafe everytime i try this, and i wanna go with as many guns as possible.

If you don't have a burner, how did you create these discs?

I think you can finalize the disc with DVD Decrypter.

Are you referring to any type of burnable DVD media, or only rewritable?

From the DVD Decrypter support forum:

I was told on another forum that dvd decrypter can help me finalize a disc that failed finalization with Nero.

All the files appear to be on my disc and the burn was succesful .. the only thing is that the finalization failed.

Can I finalize this disc using DVD Decrypter? and if so .. how do I do it?

Unless these options change based on the disc that's in the drive, there is no "Close (Track / Session / Disc)" under the "Tools..Drive" category in v.3.54

**EDIT** I stand corrected. I had DVD Decrypter set to my DVD-ROM when I checked the elements available under "Tools"...

setarip - sorry, ive written this problem on a bunch of forums and forgot to write the whole story. my friend in Japan recorded these discs off of TV with a standalone DVD recorder and didnt finalise them, thinking that if he could read them with his recorder, then any old DVD player could....

i dont have a DVD burner on my comp so if i wanna try to fix this, i have to go to an internet cafe and use 1 of theirs. i dont mind paying for it, but its just time consuming having to go on a mini voyage every time i wanna try a new theory....

cynthia - i tried DVD decryptor on my last voyage a few days ago and simply got a "media not present" error.... i guess decryptor is 1 of the only progs that cant see the media at all..... NERO, CDRoller, CD/DVD Diagnostic, ISOBuster can all see the media, but only CD/DVD Diagnostic can access all the data... sigh, maybe i'll just pay to register the software.....

but im gonna try winhex soon probably, if i can figure out how to use it for my problem....

If you don't have a burner, you won't be able to finalise it. DVD Decrypter won't recognise that it can close your disk.

Go to a mate's place that has a burner and DVD Decrypter and try cynthia's method.

ive been doing all this, bit by bit, at an internet cafe, just doing all the forum posting at home.

Well, if they have DVD Decrypter at your Internet cafe, hopefully you will be OK.

i installed it on 1 of their comps, tried finalising the discs, and simply got a "Media not present" error...
