??? 2 Channel Vs. 5.1 ???

Most players will decode AC3 2-chan.
Most will also decode 5.1 and DTS, but downsample to 2 ch if there's no 5.1 or DTS output available.
Generally, if you don't have a home theatre setup to utilize DD5.1 or DTS, then only keep the DD2.0
This leaves more room for video bitrate.

Be certain that the 2 channel audiostream is not a "Director's Commentary" audiostream, and not the actual movie soundtrack.

Do be careful that if you take the 2 channel stream only that you are not taking the directors' commentary track. Always listen to the streasm in the DVD Shrink preview window.

All compliant DVD players can downmix AC3 5.1 to 2 channel. And all can decode AC3. Many, but not all, can decode DTS but you need a DTS amp as well (which you probably do not have on a regular TV).

Did you know that some newish players can deocde DTS for the TV? My Sony NS900 player can output DTS to the TV where it is downmixed like AC3. The sound can be very quiet though.

Thank you all for the advice. In some movies that I back up, I dont need the 5.1 and 2ch. If I dont need both, then I want to take one off so that it can help the compression. In other cases,for instance, if i was to back up The Terminator, or something like that, then yes, I would want 5.1. The reason I asked the question, was to make sure if I was to take one off, that it wouldnt hurt. Besides, if I dont need it, then it makes it better so that I can free some compression!!!

@nwg - I didn't know that. It would need to be converted if the TV's amp couldn't decode it. So, maybe that's what your SONY is doing?

Rebel - you're welcome, but again, do preview the streams in DVD Shrink to determine if they are both the same. Good luck

I would assume so. I have the player connected by scart lead to the TV. So, the player would have to change the DTS to 2 channel through the scart.

I didn't noticed it did it either until I had the player for over a year.

My other players doesn't do it and I get just silence.

I have done a couple of DVD's where I keep just the DTS sound. I didn't want to lose the DTS but didn't want compresssion of 50%.

If DTS is there, I take it and omit AC-3 (because here in Pal-land, you actually don't need an AC3 track). I'm lucky in that my gear will play DTS.
