exceeding space solutions?

hi, im trying to burn a 1.3gig file to a dvd in order to watch it in my dvd player. when i try to add it using Nero StartSmart it says i exceed disk space. Is there any way i can shrink it down or any other solution to help put this file onto the dvd+r?
