    DVD-R errors during playback

I have made some copies of DVD's that I purchased in the store using DVD-R's. I use the copies when I travel for buisness as I dont want anything to happen to the originals.

When I playback the DVD-R's on my player(s) all of movies will freeze or skip or just stop at some point during playback. My DVD recorder is capable of burning in the -R format, my 4 players are capable of playing back DVD-R media. I am using DVDShrink, and Nero for the burning.

Any idea's as to why this is happening ?

I have not yet tried switching media, as I've been using Fuji media.

    Thanks Rick

If your backup freezes, stutters, skips, or has some pixelation, it is more than likely due to poor quality media being used. Cheap media is poorly manufactured around the edge of the disc, hence the reason why it mostly skips toward the end of the movie. The two main things to consider first are:
    • Is it cheap media that you are using? (ie. some off brand you bought at a local computer store/fair, even a store like Circuit City or Best Buy sells cheap low quality media.)
    • How fast are you burning? - Burn no faster than 4X, might have to go down to 2X with really cheap media.

Also, are you using adhesive labels on your back ups? If so, try removing the labels (if you can) and playing them again. Go here for more info on why not to use labels. - http://forum.digital-digest.com/show...threadid=28604

You can go here for some other possible solutions: http://forum.digital-digest.com/show...threadid=44912

Also try lowering outcome the "Target DVD size".

Open DVD Shrink. Click "Edit", then "Preferences". On the first tab at the top in the drop down box, change it from "DVD-5 (4.7GB) to "Custom" and enter a number of 4200MB (4464MB is burning to the edge of the disc, you want to stay away from the edge as the edge of cheap media (disc's) are poorly manufactured). Thanks, I will try some better media. Any suggestions ? I usually burn at 4X. I have two burners, both do 8x, but I only use 4x speed.

I willl post the log this evening when I get home.

        thanks again.

sounds like a simple matter of not using "compatible" media...i'll guess when you post your log from nero it won't recognize the fuji discs....look just below here to help find media for your devices.

They are located here: C:\Program Files\Ahead\Nero
Look for a file named "NeroHistory.log"
Open that file up and copy it.
              Then paste it here.

(You just need the last one.)

the top part of the log is missing. it starts with your serial # paste everything from that point down of the last log.

have you done a firmware update? you can check at the manufaturer's website or here:

Yes we need the first part of the log as columbo has previously mentioned.

                      But for this error.
                      "10:29:34 AM #20 CDR -1106 File Writer.cpp, Line 311
                      Power calibration error"
I get a 'Power calibration error' or 'Calibration area (almost) full' error message. Why?

Power Calibration is controlled by the recorder.

Before any write operation, all recorders must do a 15 step power test to determine the optimum power for writing to the CD; this is called "Optimum Power Calibration"(OPC). During the write, it continues to do this test to get the best write throughout the whole CD; this is called "Running Optimum Power Calibration" (ROPC).

This whole process is controlled by the recorder, though initiated by programs such as Nero. There is an area on the inner part of the CD for the test and test data info to be stored. You can use this area up to 999 times.

If you receive the "Power calibration error" or "Power calibration area is (almost) full" error message, the cause will be either poor media, poor power, or a defective recorder.

                      Please try the following solutions:

                      1. Update the firmware of your recorder. Please check the manufacturer's website for the latest version.

                      2. Try another brand of media.

                      3. Try different power connectors, and for recorders, do not share power with other devices. It needs its own power connector. If the error occurs with an external recorder, the power source in the chassis could be the cause. As a test, try to take the recorder out of the external chassis and connect it internal.

                      4. Try different configurations, such as taking the CD-ROM to the primary IDE bus as slave and have only the recorder connected to the secondary IDE bus as master.

                      5. Send the recorder in for service.
