It very much depends on your burner and players. But I use Ritek R03 and have never had a coaster.

21 Taiyo Yuden 8x DVD-R's
25 Maxell Made in Japan 8x DVD-R's
4 Verbatim Dual layer 2.4x DVD+R's
these DVDR's will work well on any DVD burner as they are all top of the line media.

i also have 35 Ridata RICOHJPNR01 4x DVD+R's for stuff thats not as important.

ok, this will ruffle some feathers :

been using "princo" since day 1. been burning aprox 2-3 year. never had a coaster due to a bad princo.
did try other brands but, saw no point in switching to more expensive blanks.
my 1st ever burn still works like a charm. i'm on my 2nd burner now, & although they were both "nec" (1300 & 2510), i still can't find "any" faults with princo.

btw, my other friends also use princo, & their burners are pioneer-106 & 107. again, no faults "ever" & at au$-14 for 50.

I was using Ritek media for over a year, but the last couple of packs I haven't been too impressed with. They were factory sealed, but some discs had dust or something else on them that blowing on them or dusting off wouldn't remove. Some of them have bubbles in between the plastic on the stacking ring, and one has been a bad disc overall. So far, discs I've burned and scanned with DVDInfoPro have been good, but I no longer trust the media for anything irreplaceable.

I just bought a spindle of Taiyo Yuden, and while I haven't quite got around to burning any yet, the condition they were in when I got them was much better, even the top and bottom of the stacking rings had adhesive covers to keep any dust out, and the discs look good. They cost more, but I figure that anything under $1 per disc (Canadian) is good. My first Princo pack 2 years ago cost me over $100, and I think Taiyo Yudens were going for almost $200 at the time.

What ritek media were they? Their 8x G05 media isn't very good unless they are their Extreme discs. It also depends on what grade the disc is. Some are not even made in Ritek factories.

I still have no problems with Ridisc "grade A" G04 media. I prefer spindles of 10 rather than 25. I would be happy to pay slightly more for individual cases rather than spindles.

I used only G04 4x media. The last couple of batches were the inkjet printable, and I had some silver matte ones before that. The silver matte ones that I received in cake boxes were good, but the ones that they ship with the red wrapper I wasn't too impressed with. I think because they have the top and bottom of the pack exposed (where the hole in the discs are) allowed dust and debris to get worked into them. It made me less confident in their media. So far, the TY discs look good, and my first burn with them worked fine. The only thing that bugs me about the ones I have is that they're 8x, but won't burn at 2x, just 4 and 8, so on my one computer that has an older burner, they probably won't work (I have yet to try though).

I am not surpised 8x media cannot burn at 2x. What is known as the writing strategy for the burner would actually cause more errors when burning high speed media a low speed. The burner has a different methods of burning media at different speeds.

As I only want to burn at 2x, I bought lots of 4x media.
