1x-8x burn problems

This is probably going to be a simple fix for someone. I can use any 1x-4x dvd+R without any problems (even though my burn speed is only 2.4) but when I use a 1x-8x it will not work. Is there a software patch that I need to download or something and if so, where can I find it.
