Help with DVD Shrink

Hi all, newbie here,

Here's where I stand...

when making a back up, I make the menu's and extra's as still pics, and have the main movie at no compression, or very little. Once done, Nero burns a back up. The menu is very glitchy (like it should be) I click the movie, and it plays. Here's the problem, some movies get about 5-15 minutes into it, and it either freezes, skips, or loops back to the beginning of the particular scene.

Is this common?

This is driving me nuts, I'm wasting blanks, and I just want to figure this out, please help.

ps... I have a 1.4G prossesor, 32 vid card (shared compaq) 756mb ram (upgraded from 256mb) and 40 gig HD. I'm using Nero 6 full version, and the latest DVD Shrink.

sounds like bad burns due to bad/poor media, or you're burning them at a faster speed.
lower the burn speed, & test your burns :

also, your player may just be fussy with certain media.

before you make more coasters, invest in some "rw" media

If your backup freezes, stutters, skips, or has some pixelation, it is more than likely due to poor quality media being used. Cheap media is poorly manufactured around the edge of the disc, hence the reason why it mostly skips toward the end of the movie. The two main things to consider first are:

• Is it cheap media that you are using? (ie. some off brand you bought at a local computer store/fair, even a store like Circuit City or Best Buy sells cheap low quality media.)
• How fast are you burning? - Burn no faster than 4X, might have to go down to 2X with really cheap media.

Also, are you using adhesive labels on your back ups? If so, try removing the labels (if you can) and playing them again. Go here for more info on why not to use labels. - http://forum.digital-digest.com/show...threadid=28604

Also try lowering outcome the "Target DVD size".

Open DVD Shrink. Click "Edit", then "Preferences". On the first tab at the top in the drop down box, change it from "DVD-5 (4.7GB) to "Custom" and enter a number of 4200MB (4464MB is burning to the edge of the disc, you want to stay away from the edge as the edge of cheap media (disc's) are poorly manufactured). Thanks for the welcome, and also all the great info. Sorry I didn't do a search, I really wouldn't even know what to search for lol...

I'm using dvd-r which is better for this type of thing, + or - ? I know -R seem to be more popular with stand alone players, but what has the better burn quality?

Neither one is better in my opinion. Neither one has better burn quality either. They both burn the same. As you stated, -R seem to be more compatible with stand alone DVD players. (In disagreeing with myself, +R is also very compatible with stand alone DVD players if you use the "Booktype", also called "Bitsetting" feature on +R media and make them appear as "DVD-Video" disc. Not all DVD burners/writers are capable of using Booktype or Bitsetting though.)
