DVR-109 gives write error with dual layer

I had been burning dual layer fine up until recently. I have been using verbatim and memorex media. For some reason I get write errors now once the burner starts trying to burn the second layer. I thought it might be a good idea to upgrade my firmware (I currently have 1.17 and the latest is 1.50). I tried doing that but when I run the upgrade firmware software it keeps saying that I have a disk in my dvd drive which I don't. I don't have a disk in either my dvdrom drive or my dvr-109 burner. What the heck is goin on.

Have you tried with the 1.4 version - same error message?

Yes, although now when I try to upgrade with 1.5 it says "target not found".

Normally a firmware upgrade is a good thing. But if your writes were going OK, I would leave the firmware alone.

Which DL disks did you have problems writing to? Verbatims are considered top quality, the rest including Memorex, Riteks and others are much less so. If it was just the memorex ones, don't worry. Buy Verbatims and burn away merrily.

If not, then a firmware upgrade might help.

What are you burning with (software)? It also sounds like the LB flag may not be being set properly. I can tell you that PgcEdit v6.0 will be out this week, with DL burning capability via DVD Decrypter.

Do also check DMA and write speed. See the golden rules of burning in my sig.

check the "data cables" on the back of the drive/s & the other end (make sure they're pushed in all the way on both ends)

Such a statement is misleading, without stating that it's actually the "Manufacturer's I.D." and not the labeled "brand" that's the determining factor regarding media quality.

**IMPORTANT** For some meaningful insight, I'd suggest you read the "stickies" and other postings in the "Blank Media" sub-forum here...

You'll find that true Verbatim media are not the only "top quality" media. Among others are true Taiyo-Yuden (perhaps THE best) and true Maxell.

By "true", I'm referring to the "Manufacturer's I.D."
