Media burns data but not movies

This is the second time I've experienced this. Nero will burn data (MP3 files)onto these DVD's but fails and gives an "illegal disc" message when burning Shrink (movie) files.
The brands are Maxell (RITEKG - 05) DVD-R 8x and Taiyo Yuden (TYG01) 4x.
Has anyone experienced this and could it be a problem with my settings in Nero?
Here's the log with the latest Yuden failure.

have you ever tried burning with nero manually, with the discs that were successful?

columbo, I've been starting Nero manually as of late. Since I started experiencing problems. If by "manually" you mean unchecking burn with nero in dvd shrink set-up, directing shrink to a temporary file, and closing the program when it's finished. Starting up Nero and then loading the files to be burned from the shrink temp folder...

not sure if you've updated your firmware (?) but, also could be a bad/faulty batch of blanks....
also possibly, you might be using partially burnt blanks from your previous failed burn attempts....
try using a disc deeper from the pack/spindle....
you might also try using nero's disc info for a quick check of your blanks (prior to burning).

another method i always follow :
always insert the blank before starting-up nero. wait till the "l.e.d." goes "off" on the drive/burner, & then startup nero

Actually, although an accurate observation regarding DVD+R media, this is not necessarily the case with regard to DVD-R media.

(A month or so ago, I had created [and since deleted] a thread asking posters to post their "Media Specific" information for SUCCESSFUL DVD-R burns - and the vast majority, including several of my own, showed all zeroes)

i haven't seen a thread regarding this (besides the ones i've posted previously).
all drives (readers/roms/combos/burners) vary in initialization time (after a media has been inserted & tray closes). i use the l.e.d. as as the indicator (wait till l.e.d. goes "off").
if a media (mostly blanks) is forced to be used/read/burn prior to being initialized, the chances are the media specifics won't be recognized.
new/newer burners will most likely need a firmware upgrade to cope with some of the blank media that's on the market (other firmware features may also be included also).

if the above problem still persists, then a close look/examination of the hardware/software settings will need to be looked at. also, keep in mind that certain drives on the same data cable, may/can create conflicts.

You must have changed your default settings. Change your setting in the above window to use 'Interface - SPTI'.

I did change the setting in decrypter to experiment. usually i burn with shrink. even burning a data disc with the tyg01 i get write errors. i wonder if john and i got a bad batch of tyg01's.

That is what I don't understand.

Wolf, I'd like to write it off as a bad batch of discs but this is the second time that that I've been able to burn data files to a disc (mp3 files to be specific) but have been getting "illegal disc" errors and half burns with the same media...

Mentor- thanks for the advice my Asus Motherboard only supported one IDE cable so that's why I went with dual Lite-on drive's... the hard drives are both SATA connections.

ic now john, ok with nero if the media is "-" type, the "media specific" area some say, media is not being recognized, but it clearly is above in the post. this seems to be the case with just about all "-" media. so nothing to worry about
