glitches using dvd shrink and dvd decrypter

Hello, I'm new here so please be kind!
I have an NEC 3540 with original firmware (1.01)
I installed dvd shrink (3.2) and Dvd Decrypter (3.5.4.0).
I tried to make backups using just dvd shrink but kept getting "copy protection error...I/O device error" so started using dvd decrypter to make an ISO read which seemed to work. I believe the first error message may be down to a bug in Nero (which I installed but am not using currently) so will now try unchecking "burn with nero" in the dvd shrink options.
I was then opening a disc image on dvd shrink and then re authoring that to make a backup that would fit on a single layer disk (using "make iso image file + burn using DVD decrypter").
That seems like a long way round - is using "file mode" in dvd decrypter going to be better?
The disks seem to burn ok but when playing them in my stand alone DVD player (a sony dvdps725) there are always 2 glitches about a third and two thirds of the way through when it will freeze and/or go back to the start of an earlier chapter.
Got decent media (I think) - Fuji DVD+R x8 (Ty) as recommended elsewhere. However, the dvds seem to play back ok on my PC, and having also tried Verbatim DVD+RW they seem to work fine on my stand alone as well. Is it the media? Or my sony player or something else I'm not doing right?
Is this "changing book type" going to help? (I'm not sure you can do this with my nec as it stands)
Thanks in advance for any replies.

    Liam.

update the firmware and nero, look below to make sure you are using the right media for your devices. burn no higher than 4x...these are good places to start.

Thanks for the advice, changed the max burn speed in dvd decrypter to 8x (It seemed to be burning up to 16x with my 8x media). Anyway, now seems to work OK.

Hi and welcome to the forum, liamjf!

          A nice burner.

There is no firmware updates yet for that burner. You can find some modified ones here: http://www.micheldeboer.nl/firmware/3540.html

Thanks for the links to the updated firmwares - I take it the main advantage of the unofficial ones is being able to rip at higher speeds with the "riplock" removed? The media list is very interesting as well - as far as I can tell I am using Tayio Yugen (sorry!) 8x discs (Fuji) and these are actually rated at 16x by NEC; presumably this is why my burner was trying to burn them at up to 16x. I will probably try to up the speed in future (10x or 12x) and see if they will burn OK at that speed. I assume 16x discs are more expensive but are they any more likely to work?!

            Cheers, Liam.
