my first 2 coasters in a long long time!

i just bought a spindle of 50 pack sony dvd-r 1x-8x, burned @4x. (i checked the ID and they are not fakes). they were sold out of my precious memorex!

anyway i have a habit to look at the media surface before i burn to check for lint hair etc. there was a very prominent scratch on the very first disc! what the hell? i burnt anyway hoping it might work. it burned fine, but as i suspected it skipped in the standalone when it got to the end of the disc(where about scratch was).

so i burn a second copy(now here at this point is after 6 previous perfect burns in a row of other compilations). first time ever on a r disc, i get; "burn process failed" "key medium error". my deduction is simply a bad disc. anyway, all is well now, that was the only one thus far.

these sony's are supposed to be "compatible" with my burner too. and i gotta send postage pre-paid, the disc to them for warranty!? with memorex all you got to do is fill a form on their web site and in 2 weeks you the discs at your door. (my rw-'s have had damage from shipping on occasion). so no more sony for this fella.

the first log is from the failed burn(not the scratched disc), the second from my second, successful, attempt.

anyone else notice sctaches on brand new discs?this is why i hate buying spindles--never again!

You tried to test your burnsd afterwards columbo?

Just something I do. You got a LIteON burner, so IIRC, it will record PI/PIFs as well as CRCs.

ah well, i tested one known bad disc with a definite skip a while back, using your guide and it totally missed it.(not that it's your fault--it's nero's) my policy now is "to watch, is to verify". but i mean i knew it was coming, because of the prominent scratch....

colombo - your procedures are close to mine, however, when i suspect a scratched blank may cause trouble/errors, then i lower my burn speed to even lower. if a scratch is bad, then i turf it instantly

well with my firmware the lowest speed i can burn on these is 4x...instead of tossing them, i smash them.

frankly, i don't even know why i bother. with the price of blanks nowdays, it's not worth the effort. guess i just like to try & satisfy my curiosity
