issue with fuji 8x DVD+R media? NEC 1100A (dell)

I have previously posted this in Shrink by accident it may be more beneficial here: sorry

I decided to start a new post on this topic because of the drastic (i think) changes to the original problem.

    I have a NEC ND-1100A 4X DVD+R /2.4X DVD+RW (dell system)

As of yesterday I was using Fuji DVD+R 4x media and using DVD decrypter and DVD shrink and successfully burned 5 DVDs (and in the past several DVD data discs)

    Today:

I ran out of Fuji DVD+R 4x media so i grabbed Fuji DVD+R 8x media (all they had, and i figure they no longer make 4x media; similar to the evolution of CD-R media....)
Now the problems; Software-wise I changed NOTHING; I burned 3 more DVDs (new media) and all 3 burned (but computer would only allow 2.4X burn; i couldn't choose 1x, 2x, 4x) and the computer claimed to burn successfully, but the back-ups would Randomly play in my stand-alone unit, and when they did there were random glitches......)

this is when i posted before, the common solution seemed to update firmware.

I went to Dell and updated firmware to 10GE

At this point i went to use DVD shrink to burn a DVD and discovered that it would only allow 2.4X speed!!

I went to check burn speeds and the computer (regardless of what burning program i chose) would ONLY allow 2.4X speed.

I then searched the internet and these (and similar) forums to see if there is any compatibility issues here or what......

Finally i installed DVD identifier and here is what i got:

[01:33:17] DVD+R/+RW Medium Detected. Starting Identification...
[01:33:17] ** Initiating ADIP Retrieval Method 1 (Original ADIP)
[01:33:17] ERROR : ADIP Read M1 Failed : Illegal request - Invalid field in CDB [05/24/00]
[01:33:17] INFO : ADIP Read Method 1 Not Supported ; Method 2 Will Be Attempted
[01:33:17] ** Initiating ADIP Retrieval Method 2 (Copy Of ADIP)
[01:33:17] ERROR : ADIP Read M2 Failed : Illegal request - Invalid field in CDB [05/24/00]
    [01:33:17] INFO : ADIP Read Method 2 Requires A Written DVD+R/+RW Disc
[01:33:17] Disc Identification Did Not Complete Successfully

SO.... at this point i am wondering:

    1. Is my drive broken?
    2. Is this a compatibility issue with this media and this drive?
    3. Is the media crap (DVD identifier says so....)
    4. anyone with a NEC 1100A (dell preferebly) have any suggestions on what media i should stick with?
    5. Has anyone else used this media (fuji 8x DVD+R) and what did you experience?

and any other info anyone has in this topic would be greatly appreciated...

My theory would be the media is crap. Get some Verbatim DataLife brand or Taiyo Yuden brand.

    Taiyo Yuden - http://meritline.com/taiyo-yuden-dvd-media.html

    Verbatim DataLife - http://meritline.com/verbatim-8x-dvd...printable.html

Edit: I deleted your other thread and moved this one to the appropriate forum. Duplicate posting is a violation of the forum rules here.

      jmet,
I just did a DVD identify on DVD decrypter (i selected the ISO Write mode to get the window to open)

Here is what i got using an already burned Fuji DVD+R 4X max disc
      _NEC DVD+RW ND-1100A 10GE (ATA)
      Current Profile: DVD+R

      Disc Information:
      Status: Complete

Last Physical Sector of Data Area: 2,482,719
Last Physical Sector in Layer 0: 0

Here is what i get when i put in a burned Fuji DVD+R 8x max disc

      _NEC DVD+RW ND-1100A 10GE (ATA)
      Current Profile: DVD+R

      Disc Information:

And when i put in a blank Fuji DVD+R 8x max disc

      _NEC DVD+RW ND-1100A 10GE (ATA)
      Current Profile: DVD+R

      Disc Information:
      Status: Empty

        "Supported Write Speeds: 2.4x, 4x"
This quote was taken from a previously burned "Fuji DVD+R 4x media ".

        "Supported Write Speeds: 2.4x"
This quote was taken from a blank "Fuji DVD+R 8x " that you just recently purchased.

I would take these back and get your money back. "2.4X" is the only speed it burns at. These are what they call "fake" disc.

It appears that the crappy DVD+R are actually Yudens....???? and the good Fuji are Ricoh?

So i guess I should stay away from TYs, (i noticed before you recommended them) I guess I'll see what's at the store tommorrow, should i stay away from 8x since my burner is only a 4x max (but how much longer are they gonna make 4x dvd+r for.... I'm gonna have to switch to a higher media sooner or later)

Make me mad I always used fuji media (for like the last 5 years CDr and DVDr) now i gotta find a new media to trust and from what i have been reading this DVDr thing is like the whole CDr media controversy back when CDr was new ....... but more complicated with firmware updates and media sometimes working and sometimes not (out of the same spindle in some cases!!)

well look this over (dvd identifier thing) and let me know what u think is happening (i'm leaning towards this being a media problem)

I've not read your other threads and am not sure how to interpret your drive identity line but have you checked for firmware updates? There's a v1.A3 mentioned on NEC's site.
This isn't a learning curve ... this is b****y mountaineering!

"should i stay away from 8x since my burner is only a 4x max"

Probably - If you read the warning that typically appears on the packaging of "1X-8X" media. It states that using this media in burners limited to 2.4X-4X could damage both the disc and the burner...
