What format are these movies in? Are they AVIs or DVD format (IFO BUP VOB)? Are they full movies or just parts of movies?

likely avi's.
what is the extension?
.avi, .mpg, .wmv etc?
eg. columbo.Divx.avi"One day men will look back and say I gave birth to the 20th Century". Jack The Ripper - 1888
Columbo moments...
"Double Shock" "The Greenhouse Jungle" "Swan Song" FORUM RULES

Single click on it. Then press Ctrl-Enter to bring up its properties. Find its DOS name with its extension.
Then columbo will undoubtedly suggest an excellent method involving TMPGEnc to you.

how did this file appear on the p2p network? it HAS to have an extension.
otherwise load this sucker in virtualdubmod and post everything under "file information" in the video AND audio window."One day men will look back and say I gave birth to the 20th Century". Jack The Ripper - 1888

@ right311. It has to have an extension. Try this: right click on the file, select "Properties" and the info is where it says MS-DOS name:.

Take it easy right
This is what columbo999 will advise you to do:
1. Use "TMPGEnc" (or "TMPGEncPlus") to convert the file to compliant MPEG2-for-DVD format - Use "TMPGEnc's" DVD wizard/template to accomplish this (probably unnecessary since you already have an mpg)
2. Use "TMPGEnc DVD Author" (a different program than "TMPGEnc") to easily create the required additional DVD files and structure (and chapters and a menu, if you wish)
3. If the combined filesize of the DVD "package" written to your hard drive is greater than 4.37Gb, use DVD Shrink (or similar) to compress
