      52 49 54 45 4b 00 00 00 52 30 33 02 01 -> [RITEK R03 ] 2.4 4.0 6.0 8.0

If you have the above media description you should be able to burn those discs at max 8x with this modified firmware:

      Ver 2U2
      Liggy's And Dee's NEC ND-3520 2.U2, Bitsetting, RPC1, Rip Lock (based on Liggy's 3.05bt) (NEW 17-08-2005)

EDIT: Did you try to burn them with your current firmware in the NEC?

        Cynthia,
the dvd speed was burned with newest factory firmware and the nec3520.
Kinda funny the nec wants to burn my 4x dvd-r TY's at 12x, I have been
trying everything at 8x with those ritek's and I was led to believe they were
        good media.
        thanks

I've installed the 2.U2 myself - suggest you use that one.

That your burner wants to burn faster than 4x could depend on if there is a write description on the disc for 12x.

I have some 8x labeled discs that my Nec/Nero wants to burn at 12x - which could depend on that there is a write description for 12x on the discs.

              Cynthia,
You are a wonder, and now I have to revise my standard benchmark, with
the new firmware, HarryPotterSocSt, ripped into bare flat with shrink in
19min45sec, only 30 sec off mark set by 3500 amd64 and liteon combo drive.
I knew from my karaoke work the nec3520 was better than any of our Plex
drives, now I am amazed. Using lame sis mobo with amdxp2700, 512kinhypx
              cas2 ram.

              THANK YOU
