I have a DVD recorder TEAC DV-W58G and when I use DVD discs x8, it always use the x1 speed instead of x8 or x4 ... Do you know what can I do?

    Thanx!

    1) If you have Nero installed, please run the InfoTool to find the firmware version and post it (for example):
    Code:
    Nero InfoTool 2.07

    Drive Information
    ------------------
    Drive : TEAC DV-W58G-A
    Type : DVD-R/RW Combo Drive
    Firmware Version : U4S7
    Buffer Size : 2 MB
    Date : 2004-05-20
    2) If the firmare = U4S2 you can download the newer firmware from Teac here

    3) Also find out the Media ID code for the disks you are trying to burn, DVD Identifier is a good program to find the MID code.

    4) *OPTIONAL* If your DVD-R/RW Combo Drive is a TEAC DV-W58G-A, then it is actually a rebadged LiteOn SOHW-812S, newer firmware is available from codeguys infact it's even possible to update the firmware to LiteOn SOHW-832S (but not recommended if you're a newbie), I've had great results with my Teac crossflashed to 832S firmware CG5G.

    hope this helps

      Hello Taelon,

Thank you very much for your help.

Unfortunately, my firmware version is H4S2 and it seems there is no new firmware version available for this version (only for H4S3  ). This is the InfoTool output:

      Nero InfoTool 3.02

      Drive Information
      ------------------
      Drive : TEAC DV-W58G
      Type : DVD±R/RW Recorder
      Firmware Version : H4S2
      Buffer Size : 2 MB
      Date : 2003-12-02
      Serial Number
      Vendor Specific : 2003/12/02 17:26
      Drive Letter : F:\
      Location : 1:0
      Mechanism : Tray
      Read Speed : 40 X
      Write Speed : 40 X

And, this is the output form DVD Identifier:

      Drive capabilities on this disc:

      ** INFO : Drive = TEAC DV-W58G [FW H4S2]
      ** INFO : Write Capabilities = DVD+R DVD+RW
      ** INFO : Write Capabilities = DVD-R DVD-RW
      ** INFO : Disc = [DVD-R:CMC MAG. AE1]
      ** INFO : Reference Speed : 1x DVD = 1385 kBps
** INFO : An Writeable Disc Is Recommended For Accurate Results
** INFO : Write Speeds (Supported By This Drive On This Disc) Listed Below

** INFO : GET PERFORMANCE Write Speed Descriptor(s)
      Descriptor #1 = 1385 kBps ( 1.00x) - [CLV/Non-Pure CAV]

** INFO : MODE SENSE Write Speed Descriptor(s) [Legacy Command]
** WARNING : MODE SENSE Is Obsolete And Not Always Properly Supported
      Descriptor #1 = 1385 kBps ( 1.00x) - [CLV/Non-Pure CAV]

Although it says “** INFO : Reference Speed : 1x DVD = 1385 kBps”, the media is x8 (tested in other recorder).

      Any suggestion ?

      Thanx!!!

Eria, that is very strange that Teac doesn't list an upgrade from H4S2 to H4S3 perhaps there was also a hardware change at the same time? I hope not.

I see that your Media code is DVD-R:CMC MAG. AE1, this could be a problem since it isn't even listed in the H4S3 supported media list (pdf). The easiest solution might be to buy good quality 4x media that the drive supports.

However, it's usually a good idea to update the drives firmware to the latest available, and after some more research I found the H4S3 firmware that you can try at dhc014's firmware page. He indicates that the drive is really an OEM version of LiteOn LDW-811S.

Make absolutely certain that you create a backup of the old firmware before you flash the drive to the new firmware! Be sure to read everything on the How to Flash page, especially what to do in case of a misflash.

Once you've successfully flashed the drive to H4S3, you should be able to flash to the new Teac H4S4 firmware and with any luck, that will include support for your DVD-R media.
