dual layer questions

Concerning dual layered DVD's, do professional DL DVD's fully fill up the first layer before they start filling the 2nd layer?

Or can they fill each layer partially (like 80% full on each layer)?

How about when I burn DL DVD's on my computer?

What is the best (and cheap ) way to backup DL DVD's so they are identical, with the layer transition at the same spot, multi-angles intact, branching intact, etc?

The best way to back up, make a exact 1/1 copy is to use DVDD, ISO read, then ISO write. Make sure you click on the MDS file when using ISO write which burns your copy, because the MDS file contains information needed for the layer break ( tells burner when to switch from 1st layer to 2nd layer. You must have a dual layer burner to be able to do this. Good Luck

I did what you said.

I have a DL burner and verbatim DVD+R DL discs
I used DVDD ISO read.
When I tried ISO write with the mds file, it said the following:

There doesn't appear to be enough space on the disc to burn this image.

Image size: 3,924,600 sectors
Disc size: 2,295,104 sectors

Would you like to continue anyway?

It looks like you have put a single sided DVD in the drive and not a DVD+R DL.

A DVD+R DL has 4,173,824 sectors.

I bought a 10 pack of DVD5 verbatims packaged in a DL verbatim box.
Some unscrupulous ahole must have put the DL's in the DVD5 box and paid the DVD5 price.
I went back to BestBuy to exchange em and they were sold out of DL's.
Dammit.

To answer your first question, you don't need to fill up the first layer (layer 0) completely. You can partially fill it just so long as layer 1 has less data on it.

LUK came out with ImgBurn. Obviously it doesn't decrypt. But is there an advantage to using that as opposed to just burning with Decrypter when doing a straight 1 to 1?

I have been wondering about the same thing. I can't see how imgburn can improve something that DVD Decrypter claimed to be 1:1 copy of the original (plus the LB position). I can see that is improve DL burns where the DVD is reauthored or changed in some way.
