using nero 7 and taiyo yuden media but getting illegal disc error

hello everybody, I'm a newb to the forum but I've been reading the posts on here and haven't been able to solve my problem. I've got a Memorex DVD16+/-DL4RWID2 drive in an enclosure with the latest jws6 firmware and nero 7 burning rom (after a burn with the "illegal disc" error, I updated everything). I'm using taiyo yuden media and have produced two coasters which I'm very sad about because they've NEVER given me any problems ever (this scares me). I'm also using my new compaq laptop so I know I have usb2 ports on here, so no incompatibility there. Here's one of the nero log files I saved. HELP ME PLEASE!!!

I've read somewhere that my drive may be a rebadged liteon drive or something, so the firmware upgrade I did really won't help. Is this true? Should I crossflash to the latest liteon firmware?

try using nero 6. forgive me if i'm wrong, but i think your nero 7 is pirated (and likely to be unstable/buggy/fake), because its has not yet been released (its not october 13 yet)

illegal disc is usually because of unsupported media. check http://www.videohelp.com for a list of supported media for your dvd writer, you may also want to lower your burning speed...

You should only use genuine Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden media. Many thanks to www.pcx.com.au for their supply and great service.

there's a lot of crud running in the background, is your vid sharing 128?

8x is pushing the envelope on an "OPTIMIZED" computer with usb2!

according to cdfreaks review, "It will crossflash to 1693S, now it supports DVD-R9 DL"

It is a shared mem vid card. Know any way to free up more memory like what programs are essential to keep running? ok I'll try a slower speed. Thanks for all the suggestions.

If you can share 64 megs onboard vid, shrink would appreciate it,
nero probably doesn't need it at 4x. Program running down next to clock
and speaker icon are usually candidates for turning off, laptops take a few special programs. Powermanagement and keyboard/mouse stuff leave alone.
What other burning programs do you have installed?

nothing but nero. got any suggestions? I successfully burned at 4x but damn, I really wish I didn't buy a 16x burner if 4x is the max I can get consistently. but yeah, any other alternative burning program suggestions will be much appreciated. THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO HELPED ME OUT.

you can change the amount of shared memory in the BIOS. (press the key mentioned when you start your laptop, to enter the BIOS. usually the 'delete' button) look for a setting 'vidoe shared memory' or something like that.

if you are not using the laptop for gaming (integrated has very poor performance anyway, and wouldn't be able to play much), you should lower it to ~32mb

What do you expect with a laptop? USB2 only does a little over 10-11MB/s.
8x burning is almost 11MB/s. 16x burners is all they make nowdays,
nothing special there at all. I burn at 4x on media made in JAPAN
with computers that run circles around laptops. The whole point is to be able
to make a movie backup that plays well and lasts.

                          shrimpcurry:

                          Do you have Roxio installed?

(Actually, your nero log indicates that you do... There is a driver listed there in your log which is the one that Nero claims is a Roxio driver that can cause a lot of "illegal disc" problems.)

In the majority of cases, the "illegal disc" points to a media issue (but you are using Taiyo Yudens, and we hope they are authentic ones), and it also
often points to firmware problems, or the DMA versus PIO problem.

However, SOMETIMES it is caused by the conflict that some people have had on their systems when they had both Roxio and Nero installed. Even though Roxio is not running in any way, the Nero apparently uses some drivers which it expects to be Windows ones, only Roxio has come along and replaced these with its own version. The "packet writing software" is the issue, here, from what i have read.

Not all systems have this conflict. Thousands are able to have both on their system with no problem. But, there have been enough legitimate reports of this that BOTH Roxio and Nero have tech notes at their web site about it (and both try to tell you to uninstall the other one's stuff, of course).

The solution -- try to uninstall Roxio. Try another burn. If you get the same result, go to Nero's web site, and look for the special utility there that they have which will truly get rid of all of those old Roxio drivers (some apparently can hang on even after you uninstall, in some cases). Then, try once more.

If you still get the "illegal disc error, ignore all of this, as it was not apparently applicable to your system.

                          --- For further study ---

From what I have read, this is one of the drivers that indicates Roxio has been on your system:

                          File 'Drivers\PXHELP20.SYS': Ver=2.03.27a, size=20576 bytes, created 1/25/2005 11:03:00 PM (Prassi/Veritas driver for win 2K)

You will find this same driver listed in your Nero log above; scroll to the place where it mentions "existing drivers."

Even it is not Roxio, it could be many of Sonic Solutions's other products, including RecordNow!, Easy CD DVD Creator, Easy DVD Copy, DVDit, etc etc.

                            Regards

well everyone, I burned one single disc successfully and then it bombed again! I DID have sonic software installed so I uninstalled it from my computer. I also used the cleanpack from the nero site to see if any drivers were still present. After that I tried another disc but with no success. Here's the log and PLEASE HELP ME!!! I am going insane!!!
