Burn Failures- I'm new to all this. Please help

I am new to all this DVd burning processes and programs. I have only just bought an internal DVD burner. Samsung. I am having problems with backing up DVD's. Sometimes it is burning successfully first go and other times it is failing. It can fail at all differnt % times. I have listed a copy of my failure report. Is there anyone out there that can help me ?????? I need to know what I am doing wrong as I now have more useless coaster DVD's than successfully burnt DVD's.
    Thanks.
    Goober.

    where's your OS?
    Burn process started at 12x (16,620 KB/s)
    Way too fast!
    CdRomPeripheral : TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-H552U atapi Port 1 ID 1 DMA: On
burner slaved to reader, not good
    Physical memory : 247MB (253424kB)
    Free physical memory: 86MB (89048kB)
    Memory in use : 64 %
Not optimal either, better to have more free!

And the whole end of the log is missing, drivers????

    Good media, but firmware flash(hacked)?
    Nero could be updated!

That Nero version was very buggy - anything before 6.3.1.25 apparently was very iffy.

Also, I have not heard many good things about that drive.

I have just tried to burn at a lower speed. I am using DVD Shrink and I only get the option of "Maximum" or 16.0x. How do I reduce this. I am using Blank Discs TDK 1-16x Speed -R.
            Thanks

Ok, Sorry to sound like a complete idiot to you, but what do I have to do to Free up physical memory? and reduce burn speed? ( DVD shrink only gives me the option of Maximum or 16x).
What do you mean by "Firmware flash(hacked)? Do I need to do anything with this?
I have also updated Nero. ( I worked that one out... )
              Thanks

Turn off burning with nero in shrink's preferences, see the FAQ's,
then burn manually with nero, set burn speed to 4x at first.
The programs running in the background usually show next to the
speaker & time icons. I prefer to never let them get started until I need them.
Disregard the firmware for now, if you didn't flash the drive already!???
I would also try slower older name brand media, as the drive seems picky.

Burn Failures- I'm new to all this. Please help

You have MCE2005, not MCE2002. XP reports it wrong, but a 5150 would
                  only have come with 2005.
Assuming you haven't reformatted your hard drive, which I suspect you
haven't, reboot the machine and at the Dell logo, press CTRL+ALT+D. It will
bring up the Diagnostics. Run them and it will test your CD burner. If it
fails, just tell Dell that and they will give you a new burner, no problem.
The tech should have run you through that step, but may not have.
