problem with DL burns

I can't make a DL backup of my Amelie DVD. I use Verbatim DL media.

I used DVDD ISO read with create MDS file.
Then I used DVDD ISO write with the MDS file at 2.4 write speed.
No errors detect by DVDD but the DVD doesn't play on my stand alone DVD players.

I tried again thinking it was just a bad burn but same result the 2nd time.

I used the same process for other movies and they all work fine on all my stand alone dvd players.

Weird thing is only my DVD-ROM DL burner drive can read the disc and play it without troubles. My non-burning DVD-ROM drive doesn't even detect it, just like my stand alone players.

Also, when you look at the read-side of burned DVDs, you see 2 shades of color: the original unburned shade and the lighter burned shade. Well, this is true for my working DL burns. But the non-working DL burns have 3 shades.

What would happen if I used DVD Shrink or DVDD file mode to rip and burn using nero? My guess would be that it would have two slight pauses, one for the original layer break and one for the new layer break?

Help would be greatly appreciated

If you are using Verb DL+R's you have to change the booktype/bitsetting for your burner in DVDD to make sure that the DL+R's gets burned in the DVD-ROM format. The setting is down next to the write speed, looks like a little book, in DVDD. Select your burner then select the type of media, DL+R's/DVD+R's, that you want to change to DVD-ROM. You only have to make the change in DVDD once.

Can you post a pic of your 3 shaded burn please? The 2 shades are fine - this means the disk didn't burn to the edge before the LB was encountered and is actually a good thing.

You could try ripping in file mode, all files and using the guide to DL burning on the PgcEdit site.

PS. Check your DMA!

here's a pics of the DVD:



The outer-most ring is the darkest and is the unburned area.
The middle, widest ring is lightest in shade.
The inner ring is darker than the middle ring but lighter than the outer ring.

It isn't a real good pic, but I get the point. Don't worry about the outer bit, it is simply not written to. But the inner bit hasn't been either, and usually, it starts right there at sector 0. Yours appears not to have burned correctly.

Gunna need to see a burn log. Can you also please read "How to test your burn" in my signature and perform that test and post those graphs for me.

Since this is a burning problem, I have moved the thread to that forum.

PS Did you check your DMA?

All green and 0 errors on the scandisc test.
But it failed the data transfer test; here's a pic of it:



I don't know how to view a burn log of past burns.

DMA is enabled.

I think the visible inner ring is a burned area; it's a different color than the outer unburned ring.
You can't really see in the pic provided but there's ~2 millimeter ring of unburned area (same color as the outer ring) on the very inside of the dvd.
If you look at the 2 blue lines cause by light reflection, they extend pass the visible inner ring and end inside the somewhat camouflaged inner-most unburned ring.

Looks like a bitsetting problem.
I set to DVD+R DL and DVD-ROM and it worked fine.
I wasted 3 DL's over a simple thing like this...i feel stoopid.

The bitsetting thing doesn't affect my DVD-R burns, does it?

What else was going on with your PC during the burn (or the test!!)? Layer 1 burned beautifully, as you can see, but L0 looks very ragged! (Remember, it only has to play at 1x!).

It does appear that something else was interfering with the burn. Try again (in test mode first), but this time turn off your internet connection, email client, other progs that hog resources.

Re bitsetting: It is always useful to do this on +R disks - especially for +R DL disks. Not for -R ... ever!
