I have a new DVD burner Sony DRX-800ul. The only options for burn speeds I can find are 6X to 16X. Even at 6x I'm getting crappy results. Is there a way to slow the drive down?

With a lot of the 16x burners the firmware will only burn most media at 6x for the slowest speed, it all depends how it is handled in the drives firmware.

Here is a recent burn log on the new drive. The toshiba drive listed as the D drive below used to burn great at 2x but is tempermental for other reasons.

Free up some system memory. All of those icons next to your PC's clock. Right click on them, then left click on "Exit" before you start burning. You can also go here to learn how to stop these programs from starting up everytime you reboot. - http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?t=56373

Slow it down to 4X.

Book Type setting is only for +R media.

Just out of curiosity - have you tried to copy a burned disc back to your hard disk? If you can do that - the burning should be ok.

The problem with the playback can be that your stand alone player don't like to deal with burned discs.

The discs do work fine on my computer but are pixilated on my DVD player. Could this just be a higher quality reader in my computer? are there recomendations for stand alone DVD players that will read the same dics as the computer drive?

If your backup freezes, stutters, skips, or has some pixelation, it is more than likely due to poor quality media being used. Cheap media is poorly manufactured around the edge of the disc, hence the reason why it mostly skips or freezes from the middle toward the end of the movie. The two main things to consider first are:

1. Is it cheap media that you are using? (ie. some off brand you bought at a local computer store/fair, even a store like Circuit City or Best Buy sells cheap low quality media.)

2. How fast are you burning? - Burn no faster than 4X, might have to go down to 2X with really cheap media.

Also, are you using adhesive labels on your back ups? If so, try removing the labels (if you can) and playing them again. Go here for more info on why not to use labels. - http://forum.digital-digest.com/show...threadid=28604

Also try lowering outcome the "Target DVD size".

Open DVD Shrink. Click "Edit", then "Preferences". On the first tab at the top in the drop down box, change it from "DVD-5 (4.7GB) to "Custom" and enter a number of 4200MB (4464MB is burning to the edge of the disc, you want to stay away from the edge as the edge of cheap media (disc's) are poorly manufactured). There are programs called Omnipatcher by the Codeguys and MediaCodeSpeedEdit by ala42 that will allow you to change the burner firmware to burn media at a lower speed if your burner is supported by the programs if it is the media that is the problem.

Also if the burner is supported by Omnipatcher or MediaCodeSpeedEdit you can dump the supported media codes from the drives firmware and see what it supports.
