Burning a DL Disc

Now that I have finalized the first of two movies, it is time to burn them to a DVD+R DL disc. I went out to Micro Center and bought a 10-pack of Verbatims. They claim to be able to burn at 4x or 5x on high-speed drives, like mine. Could I burn safely at 4x or is that unsafe for DL discs, so I should use the normal 2.4x?

I've burned about 50 of these (I posted the Micro Center deal), and can burn them up to 8x. 2.4x on my BenQ 1640 is best. You can see my scans at clubcdfreaks in the BenQ forum. Look for DL threads.

Exactly. Hence me stating 2.4x is best.

Some of my 8x were pretty good, but not consistently.

I burn at 2.4x. It takes about 40 minutes.

Put it this drf - I burn DLs at 2.4x I just don't take the risk just to save a few minutes. Prices are still pretty high here.

I stated that up to 8x was possible, but I found 2.4x to be best. I have of course tried all possible speeds.

As blutach stated, the few extra saved minutes @ higher speeds is not worth a lessor burn.

OK I get it. And how the heck can you burn at 8x? It says 5x on the box, and I have not seen any burners that burn faster than 5x dual layer.

The latest Pioneer 110 and NEC 4550 drives do 8x with DL+R and 6x with DL-R.

The BenQ 1640 will burn them at 8x, as I stated in my first post.

And yes. My Pioneer 110D will also.

Odd. It still says up to 6x on the box.

I will play it safe at 2.4x however.
