Question--conflicting Right To Copy

I am new here and have lots of questions I just purchased a HP lightscribe dvd-r/rw recorder. My friend backs up movies and tells me that rentals have a way of seeing / screening the movie rental if you did in fact make a copy of their title? Is that true I mean I dont want to get introuble or anything?

This forum does not condone backing up rentals as that is illegal copying. We give advice about backing up DVDs you have purchased.
