LG GSA-4167b Firmware updates

Hi,

I have recently added the above re-writer to my system as an external device using an enclosure connected to a USB2 port.

Before attempting to burn any DL DVD's I would like to check the firmware version and if necessary download the D12 version from the LG site (http://gb.lgservice.com/index_b2c.jsp).

My queries are:

1) How do I check the firmware version of the unit at present?

2) The above link states that the unit must be connected to the secondary IDE controller - would my USB set-up allow me to download and install the firmware without fouling anything up?

LG specify's quite detailed instructions, I go by the book with them.
watch out there are 2 different firmwares depending upon which
firmware you have.
It's your drive, but I will glad to test it for you. I'd take it out of the
case, hook it up to a regular computer as specified, if I had to flash.
Of course my 4163 survived a flash with a disk in, do as chewy say, not as chewy do. I have flashed twice since then in safe mode standalone secondary master. It's as good a burner as any I own.
edit: for burning nasa quality disks but not for verifying the wonderful
job it does

That's what LG's like - IDE secondary master, no slave.

Thank you both for your rapid response and help.

Nero InfoTool states that the firmware is version DL10, but I will leave it at that for the present as I don't have another computer to set it up on and, as my present computer's warranty has not expired, I can't install it internally yet as this would invalidate it. I will do this when I am able and then follow the update procedure exactly as per LG instructions as this seems the safest way.

P.S. I realise that I should start another thread elsewere for this, but while I was perusing Nero InfoTool, it stated that my System ASPI is corrupt but the Nero ASPI is OK, but I have had no problems at all using any writers/software etc?

Ner0 tends to report that about system ASPI. It uses its own ASPI when burning so don't worry.

Where did you get the usb burner? LG mentions no stock externals.
I figured it was a custom build. There's nothing really involved
in the assembly, as easy to put in a case as is too install in a computer.

so how does taking it out void a warranty?

just take it out and set it on table next to computer(any) and flash

get a geek to do it for you

should have been done first before assembly

Sorry, I should have been a bit clearer, I do mean the PC warranty.

I could flash it externally as you say, or wait until the PC warranty finishes and then fit it internally, then update as per the LG procedure. I will see how it performs on DL discs as it is and if it seems OK I will probably wait until I fit it internally before I update.

Well at least you bought state of the art(the LG), I just got around to installing an older NEC drive that I have had for months, when I put it in,
I unhooked the cables to the 2 other burners(Benq and LG) and flashed the nec as standalone master on the secondary ide. Crossflashed to a maddog,
5th gen firmware.
