16x or 8X...does it matter?

Have you burned at 16x and 8x and found 16x better?

I burned a 16x certified media (Verbatim +R MCC 004) @4x, @8x, @12x, and @16x with the same burner, and find that the best results was @12x.

Do you have 40 wire cables? Try to use 80 wire cables. Check if DMA is active (metter if UDMA-2 or UDMA-4).

One of my machines has a Sony DRU-710A. I have had that one installed for a little over a year and have burned over 500 SL Sony DVDs in it with only a very few coasters. Those coasters were ones that I made authoring errors and were simply my fault. I did have pixelation problems in some when I burned at 8X and higher, however, when I kept the burn speed at 4X, I had and continue to have, no problems whatsoever. I have been using SL Sony blank media exclusively.

Sony DRU-710A is a rebadged liteon 1633S, one of the worst burners ever made by liteon.

I had one and it broke after 6 months. Burning quality of this hardware was always very low, until the definitive broke. Now I have a liteon 1693, and I obtain very good burnings @12 and @16x (most @12x; very few @16 due to media lacking).

Sorry, my current Sony blanks are 8X and I have been burning with Nero 6.

Maybe it is one of the worst out there, but it works.

Just a curiosity, are these maxell media made in Japan? I also burned 8x certified taiyo @16x with good results (but better results for me are @12x with these media)

Older IDE cables have 40 pin and 40 wires. Nowdays IDE cables have 40 pin but 80 wires to improve data flux and avoid data corruption. With older cables you can't reach high speed because data will be corrupted, so maybe the cause of your slow speed is due to an older cable.

To check DMA, go to control panel --> Administrative tools --> Computer management

On this window go to Device manager on left panel

From device manager, expand the item "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers"

Double click on Primary IDE Channel and then click on Advanced Settings tab.

See here if DMA is active.

Do the same thing with Secondary IDE Channel.

Another thing: what IDE drivers do you have? On the same window of DMA check what IDE drivers do you have.

It all depend on the combination of burner/firmware/media.

There is no absolute rule. And as I said, with high speed certified media is better to burn around their certified speed. The best results are obtained in this way.

But maybe I'm too picky regarding burning quality (yes, I admit: I'm a member of CDFreaks also )
