Can the contents of a DVD be backed up on a CD ?

i was wondering if there was a way to back up a DVD onto a CD ? it basically contains files. the reason i want to do this is coz not all comps have a DVd rom but almost all do have a CD rom drive ? pls advice

Simply drag and drop all files on a temporary folder on your harddrive and then burn them on a CD.

If these files are bigger than 700 MB, then you can use WinRAR to split a file in 700 MB chunks. No need for compression, so rejoining of segments is faster.

apologies..i didnt quite get that. lets say a DVd is 4.5Gb and i need to shrink 4.5GB data onto a CD which is just 700mb...how would i do this with winrar...pls advice..thank you

just another suggestion. i'd use magic dvd ripper (or similar) to rip the dvd to a 700 MB .avi file on my HD, which can then be burned as a single data CD. this software has a free trial too

If it is video DVD, you can encode it into VCD (mpeg-1) and burn it onto a CD. Although by doing this, the quality will be definitely degraded. You can use TMPGEnc Plus for this job

thank you for replying all. no its not a music DVd...its just files....so how would i do this....

just miscellaneous data files? i'd go with geno888's advice then. you can't fit all that data onto a CD-R.

Insert the DVD on your drive.

After disc is ready, open windows explorer.

Right click on the DVD and select "Add to archive"

Then select Compression method --> Store

and Split to volumes --> 700 MB

The same can be done with WinZip, if you prefer, or with 7Zip or with any archive tool you like more.

If you're using dvddecrypter to rip you can go to tools>settings>ifo and choose the size of the output files. ie 700mg
