    Buffer level

Ok I am sorry if this has been covered before but I have seached and have not fixed my problem. I use nero 6.6.0.8 I have a norwood micro dl drive and firm ware is updated. my processor is amd xp 2500 1 gig of ram and my hard drive is a maxtor 160gb 8mb buffer 7200 rpm. When I burn a dvd regardless of brand or spead, the first 47% the drives buffer stays at 97-98% then it goes from 80-97% up and down for the rest of the burn. The used read buffer never goes below 100%. I never get an out right coaster, it always finish's burning, but I do get pixalation on the playback or it may freeze totally. I have read to make sure the hard drive is set as master as well as the burner and both are. Also to make sure the DMA is set as 5 for main and DMA 2 for second, well in my computers propertys it has primary channel with a master and slave dma and a secondary channel with a master and slave, what should each be set as? I am useing windows xp professional service pack 2. Any one who Knows what the dma channels should be on each channel and any ideas what to do to help with this problem would be a great help.

    Thanks

If you have only one HD and one optical device, the best config is to put each drive as master on separate IDE channels.

In my opinion the best config is to put each hard drive as master in separate channels and the burners as slave on separate channels.

Check that cable are plugged correctly: master drived must me on outer connector, and slaves on intermediate.

If you can, use 80 wire cables; these are not absolutely necessary for all drives, but surely aid to improve data flux

Check also if you have nVidia IDE drives or standard microsoft (the best available until now)

I'd start with a nero log, that's the best approach.

              For mine - Primary = HD1 (boot), HD2
              Secondary - DVD Burner, DVD-ROM

Keep those buffers full when burning!

              Regards

not many of those compusa, fmi burners out there?
anyway, the burner isn't identifying the media

this program will tell us about your blanks

I got the burner as a product replacement. I don't think the brand matters, in this case because I have had this problem with 6 different brands of blank dvd's and on 3 different dvd burners, my first burner was a micro advantage the second was a io magic and now the comp usa norwood brand. I have used memorex, TDK, FUJI, RIDATA, compusa brand and dynex (bestbuy brand). And all will burn and all will get the buffer flux, I have burned probaly over 1,500 dvd movies. But if the burner is not identifying the media why does it burn the first 47% at 97-98% buffer then drop after the second half it does this every burn never any different. also the rest of the specs on my pc and info looks good?

Let's see if I can explain this, the firmware contains write strategies
for specific media types, if it can't identify the media exactly it uses
generic strats, sometimes that works but it's a possible cause of your
problems. You have as yet to use a good dvd burner.
Now the buffer problem is a lot harder to pinpoint, I have it on one computer
myself, getting good burns but the times were way slow(not dma),
I rolled back the nvidia ide drivers and most of the problem disappeared.
I am putting a better power supply in and doing a clean install of XP next.

Now use dvdidentifier to check those disks that pixelate and freeze.

more than likely your ide drivers are hosed

ok I tried to change the ide drivers to the windows drivers and get flux after 11% into the burn. SO so far the nvidia drivers are better. I will look for newer version and see if that helps.

Chewy you said the drive is not recogniseing the blank disk and useing a generic settings for the disk, my question now is can I imput them manualy?

and maybe I should spend some good money on a good drive what would be your sugestion to get?

consensus of opinion all over the internet is use windows drivers
for ide when burning, nvidia's newer ones do work for some.

tell us the media codes of the problem disks

nec benq LG are all good economical drives

This is the current blank discs I have now. But like I said this problem is on 6 other brands of dvds.

ritek R03 is the code, just give 1 or 2 more different ones and then we will know it's not the media.

did you roll back the driver for main id controller?
                              not the primary or secondary
