Why is my external DL burner recognize my dvd media as cd?

hello,
i have the HP dvd740e external double layer burner. i have backed up a few movies with it perfectly using the dvd shrink and nero process. and now i'm trying to make a full copy with the double layer using the verbatim dvd+r double layer disc. but my burner ( i guess nero too) sees the media as a cd recordable so nero will not start the process. so is there something wrong with my burner or is it the media? thanks in advance.

should i buy a different media, like sony, to see if it will work with my burner?
