Burning problems (DVD data disc -> many small video files)

I have a bunch of video files that I have recorded on my computer through my TV tuner. I am trying to put these on to a couple of blank DVD's, but am having a really tough time getting things to work. I was using a cheap brand called "EL2" (Everyday Living brand from Fred Meyer), which has worked great for backing up movies, despite the fact that everyone says they'd be terrible (I have a few problems now and then with them, but when they work they play great on all of my players, something no other brand has done so far). Anyway, when trying to use Nero to burn a data disc, it kept failing at different spots. I tried doing the same process about a half a dozen times.

So I went and bought a package of Maxell's from Office Depot (were on sale for $15, down from $40 this week, and I thought they were supposed to be a better brand than the "EL2"). Unfortunately, they seem to be even worse. I get to about 1% every time and it quits on me.

I have no idea what I'm doing wrong, and it's getting really frustrating (I'm also having some difficulty burning/backing up some of my DVD movies, and I'm hoping the drive isn't dying on me). I'm still sorta new at this, and don't really understand the technical stuff really well, so if you guys need any additional information, let me know and I'll do my best to get it to you.

The first log is me doing the following (I left it on 8x, but it does the same thing at all speeds) using the "EL2" brand (*see log #2 for the Maxell try):
Nero StartSmart -> DVD -> Make a Data DVD -> adding my files (leaving about 500MB empty space before the little yellow/red line that I'm assuming is the max I can fit, which is about 4500MB)

This second log is me doing the burn using the Maxell brand, following the same exact steps as with the "EL2" brand (although this is the first in about 6-8 tries in which it didn't say "power calibration error" in the log):

Alright, just a little update as I sit here trying to get this working... I tried a different software for data burning called "DVD Power Burner" that got a great review from download.com (and is very nice), but it didn't work either - it failed in the burn process a quarter of the way through, twice, on both brands.

Also, I opened up AnyDVD and it said that no DVD drive was detected. If I go into the setting and look at the drive tab, it shows my drive in there. Please tell me my drive isn't dying/dead. (Actually, if that's the case, please do tell me .)

I tried looking at Memorex's website earlier for a firmware update on their site (I looked on that other site in blutach's signature that gives you firmware stuff), but the actual Memorex site doesn't have any of that (that I could find, anyway). I kind of don't trust myself using that other site, since I don't know enough about what I'm doing.

Also, I shutdown and took out the drive, and reconnected it (why, who knows), then did a system restore to about a week ago, and AnyDVD says the drive is there again. I tried burning with the EL2 brand again (this time with a movie ISO) and got to 94%, where it failed, and tried again and it got to 100% but wouldn't play (or load for the verification in DVDDecrypter). So I'm even more confused, because things are kinda going back to normal, but the DVD Data disc is still not working.

Also, about the media, I've just bought these two spindles, and can't really be spending more money on these things. And like I said (I hope I did), the EL2's have worked great for me, and work almost every time. And I've used this drive/computer and Memorex DVD's to back up files before (through making a DVD data disc in Nero) and it worked absolutely fine. So, I don't mean to be difficult in that area Chewy, but if there's any other way to work this out and test it, I would be really greatful.

return and exchange for decent media

            Burn process started at 8x (11,080 KB/s)
first log, repeat with that media at 4x

            CdRomPeripheral : Generic DVD-ROM 1.0 d347prt Port 2 ID 0 DMA: Off
if this is a sheep drive disable before burn as a test

and most importantly get that burner off the same cable as the hard drive

Ok, I'll return them and get something else. I did look at http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm to find a good brand, and since I saw Maxell in the "1st class media," and since I think there was only one type of Maxells at the store, I figured it would be ok. So, if I go to the store, how can I tell what brand (even if it's Maxell which could be good or really bad)/ID/whatever I want? How can I tell by just looking at the package? I really don't want to pay as much as I saw for the Verbatim, but if it will work... If I buy an package that says "Verbatim" on it, will they be what I'm looking for? And what would you say is a good price for them?

Also tonight, I put the drive in another (older) computer and burned a data DVD with the "Everyday Living" brand media (using Nero, same steps as on this computer), and it worked (used the Maxells, and it failed). Remember it failed about a dozen times on this computer with the EL2, so I don't think I just got a lucky disc. So hopefully this means the drive isn't bad... And hopefully this will give you another idea on what could be causing my problem. (And I'm thisclose to just reformatting and starting over, 'cause this used to work just fine... Try and convince me not to. )

and most importantly get that burner off the same cable as the hard drive

I will do that ASAP (need to go buy a cable - nothing special here, right? Just any one will work?).

I am afraid that you misunderstand what Chewy's advice. According to your Nero log file, your DVD burner is connected together with your hard drive in the same Primary Channel (Port 0) and your DVD drive is connected by itself. Your system will definitely work better if you set up to have your hard drive connected as master with the Primary Channel by itself and your DVD burner and DVD drive can connected and arranged as master and slave to the Secondary Channel together. I don't think that you need new IDE cable for that

                Regards

Alright, problem is I'm not really sure how to do that. I'm sure it'll be really simple (and that I should know how), but if you could give me a quick lesson on that I'd really appreciate it.

I also forgot to respond to this... That's another thing I have no idea how to do.

Lastly, I returned the Maxell media and bought a package of Verbatim. I tried two burns: one with a movie ISO and another with just making the data disc, and both failed. Here is the log on the data disc test.

The generic drive is a virtual drive mounted with daemon tools version 3.47 (get it? d347). Irrelevant. Just unmount all drives and disable daemon tools.

Read and implement the Golden Rules of Burning.

This is a normal garden variety write error. See the **03 section here.

You should only use genuine Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden media. Many thanks to www.pcx.com.au for their supply and great service.

                      #11
Tried a couple more tests with the Verbatim, same results - failures.

I tried using my last Memorex disc (possibly suprising that this was my second most successful media right behind that Everyday Living stuff...), and it burned the whole thing this time without stopping, but a lot of the stuff didn't work when I tried to open it on the disc. This is further than I got with anything else though... I'm going to go buy a new burner tomorrow just to see if that makes a difference (the current one is about a year and a half old, and has had much use). If it doesn't solve the problem, I'll see about taking it back. If it does work, maybe this current drive really was just dying.

Anyway, here's the log using the Memorex disc, in case it gives you any more helpful information. This is with all things shut off, daemon tools gone, etc. (and I had tried two Verbatim discs right before it, so same exact set up and they were both failures). Using that guide though (thanks blutach), I guess it's just another regular write error. But I haven't had a succesful burn on any type of media, on any type of burn, for days, so maybe it is the burner?

                          Hello kk58,

Your Memorex DVD+/-RW True8XI can be possible a rebadged version of Liteon SOHW-812S burner. Please try the newest firmware (USOS) from the site below. Hopefully it will help your burner accept the media:

Besides, your Memorex DVD+/-RW True8XI ATAPI burner should be connected together with your hard drive with the same channel. It will bottleneck your hard drive and burner perfomance. Please connect it separatedly to the secondary channel

                          Regards
