    Firewire question

I just bought a JVC MiniDV camcorder and I using the firewire that came with the firewire card; it is nothing special.

Anyways, the quality is not that good and the video when I capture it with MEP looks "digital" and kinda "blocky".

In the LCD viewfinder it is really crisp.

My question is, should a spend the $30+ and get a good firewire cable? Does it make that much of a difference? I am assuming the captured footage should look a lot better than it does.

    Thank you once again!

lets eliminate the capture software/method before you go and spend money.

try the excellent free tool 'windv' to capture the video. follow the guide here http://www.doom9.org/dv/guide_paragraph0.html

I have a DVD Recorder also that I can run a firewire to. Would this make a better quality recording?

If you use the standalone recorder to burn your discs, make sure you use the slow mode possible(XP, HP, ect). Record using the 1 hour mode or 2 hour mode. The more disc you use, the better the quality is.

              type of firewire card

Are you using a desktop or laptop? If you are using a laptop with a PCMIA card(external card) you probably do not have enough power going to the firewire card. Many of these cards need to have an extra power cord plugged into them provide enough power. Make sure you are not running any other programs while trying to capture.
