    I CANNOT burn Dual-Layer DVDs on my LG4163B !!!

    Hi there,

I have two computers, and both of them have LG4163B DVD+/-R burners (A102 firmware).

I just bought my first Dual-Layer discs (Verbatim, 8.5 GB) for a DVD back-up job...

I tried to record on my main machine, an AMD XP 2500/nForce 2, and burning FAILED ("Could not perform beginning of "Disc-at-Once"...)

I tried my secondary machine (Celeron 1.8/SIS Chipset) and got a similar message... here's the log:

And burn with ImgBurn or DVD Decrypter. I have this burner and media and have never made a bad disk.

Please slow your speed to 2.4x for DL media. Coasters are too damn expensive.

Then check out blutach's signature "burn dual layer discs safely".It works.

        CdRomPeripheral : TP3132T PLZ384Q 1.0 dtscsi Port 2 ID 0 DMA: Off

You might also want to check out DMA in blutach's signature while you are there.

          Thanks, everyone.

I burned one disc at 4x, on the Celeron machine, after updating the drive's firmware to A105... and I hope it will be OK. My back-ups are not in .ISO format, so I cannot use DVD Decrypter to burn these image files.

Question: Will I be able to update the LG's firmware on the AMD/nForce machine, and burn Dual-Layer discs on it? I've seen that thenForce motherboards seem to be having some issues, and I REALLY don't want to make expensive coasters, like blutach says...

If you are talking about using the firmware for the 4163B on something else.I would hold off on that idea until somebody with a little more knowledge comes along.I would say no.

Use PgcEdit to make an ISO image, then burn. It works better because you have to manually set a layer break and Nero just puts it in the middle which makes a coaster.

@LT the A106 does not really give you that much improvement over A105 to make it worthwhile bothering.I don't think LG has A106 posted on their site as yet.

so... are you guys saying I *can* update the firmware on the AMD/nForce platform, and then use DVDDecrypter instead, to burn the 8.4 GB files?

I don't want to end up with a dead drive, that's all...

I have two of the four original discs, so I guess I can re-rip them directly to .ISO in DVDDecrypter, and then burn them, using the same DVDDecrypter... and I can use PcgEdit to make .ISO's out of the other two discs... yes?

from what I understand, it's not the AMD, it's the nForce chipset that seems to be having issues...

Is everything else looking good in what I posted last?

Is everything else looking good in what I posted last?
The nforce and intel chipset problems are all user error related and directly
attributed to the ide driver installed. If the ide controller in question
has msdefault drivers you are safe and just to be sure flash in safe mode
where pio is used. Just beginning to get a handle on this problem.
