Possible to burn dual layer data discs?

The guides I've read on DL burning refer only to DVD structure (video_ts folders with IFO, BUP, VOB, etc.) but I am curious if it is possible to make a DL data disc. I want to archive 8GB worth of AVI, MPG and other files. Is it possible? I'm hesitant to experiment as the cost DL discs is still quite high.

There should be no reason why you shouldn't be able to.

Thanks for the reply Blu. I read your guide for DL DVD burning. I wonder if I can apply the same to a data disc. In particular, I am wondering about specifying the layer break. And do you know of a data disc guide?

You need not worry about the LB - the rules for a data disk are less onerous than that of a DVD Video. The filesystem (ISO9660) will find the files like Window$ does and they just read sector by sector.

Having said that, I have never tried this.

Blu, reading over your guide again, I think it may not apply to data discs, so I was wondering if you had any advice for burning DL discs. I have a Freecom FX-50 with the most recent firmware, and use Nero 6 for usual burning. The drive came with Roxio burning software, but I have not really used it much. In looking at PGC Edit and IMGTool, they seem geared toward video DVD burning, or am I missing something. Anyway, your advice is always helpful.

Success! I used Roxio Creator Classic to burn, which Freecom bundled and recommended, and it went off without a hitch. I got 11 backed up vids on one disc, and my HDD is a 8 gigs lighter. It was easier than I thought, but I always like to check in with the experts before a new venture. Thanks again.

I wouldn't reccomend this for 2 reasons.
given:

11 backed up vids on one disc

they could have been divided up into no more than three sl disks at less cost,
less time and more reliability

edit: actually that's 3 reasons

Point taken Chewy, and I have more SL discs than I care to mention, but I wanted to mess around with DL data discs and was curious how to do it. DL discs need to come down in price for this to be viable large scale solution to my congested HDDs. The time factor was neglible, much easier than thought. The next thing I'd like to do is try backing up some DVDs on DL discs, which looks like a more complex endeavor and for which I'll rely on the useful guide.
