    Can no longer burn +R's????

Why can I no longer backup a movie to +R media????
    Looking for some resolve.....exTREMEly frustrated!!!!

I bought a Lite-On SOHW-1633S in July of '05 and have never had any trouble backing up my movies to either +R or -R media. Now suddenly, my burner no longer likes to backup to +R media. I have tried everything that I can think of and could find in the various forums.

Here is a list of some of the actions taken thus far:
i - tried different brands of +R media
ii - upgraded drive to latest firmware (BSOS, per Lite-On site)
ii - formatted and re-installed OS, etc...
iv - tried many different backup and burning techniques including many different software packages
v - I have tried burning slow and fast (prefer 4x)

All with no success. I am getting one good burn to every 6-10 coasters. The burn would complete successfully, I would visually inspect the burn for any flaws, I would even randomly run Nero InfoTool, and everything would appear fine. But the minute I try to watch them on either my computer or any of my stand-a-lone players (CyberHome, RCA, Toshiba) they are nothing but a stuttering, freezing, freak show!!!

I have since tried using -R's and have not made one coaster since. I have tried different brands as well, and all is great again. This is all well and good, and you can call me anal, BUT I bought a unit that will burn both, and therefore would like to able to use both.

Can anyone help decipher why I was once able to use +R but no longer???

    welcome to the forum yoshi!

let's upgrade to the latest firmware

    let's flash by the book

burner should be connected as master all by itself on the secondary ide
and to insure that no buggy ide drivers enter into the equation let's do it
    from safe mode

    now what's the mid code(s) of those +R's brand(s)?

and lets get a nero burn log after the flash from a burn with +R media

Thanks so much Chewy. This site is packed full of tones of useful tips, tricks, and the like. I am truly glad I found it.

Thanks for your prompt reply! I have since ensured that my drive was indeed the master, made yet another freak show playback burn on a Maxell DVD+R using an iso image file created with DVD Shrink 3.2 then burned using Nero so that I could post a recent Nero log. As for the link to the firmware you have, it was a dead end for me. I would click on the BSOS and is seems to be a dead link. Anyway, I did download the only firmware upgrade listed on the Lite-On site for my drive and applied this upgrade on Saturday. Is this link that you post a different/better upgrade from the one that I have already run? The drive was a BSOH before the upgrade and a BSOS after.

Below is a list of the 3 different media that I am using as listed by DVD Decrypter 3.5.4.0, also is the latest Nero log.

Thanks again for your prompt reply and I hope that this will help find my solution.

I didn't think you could get that maxell made in japan anymore, mine was
ritek r03's. And the sony should burn good with your burner, but it's made in tawain and less consistent.
the firmware(saved) to desktop was DR16BS0Y.zip
        unzipped 12/2005 date bsoy.exe

        here too

Thanks again Chewy for all your help. I got the firmware that you linked and ran it. Did another burn, this time to a Memorex +R, still a freak show. Downloaded the Nero 7 Premium Trial, did yet another burn…and that too stutters.

<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comThe Maxell’s I bought last week from Wal-Mart. As for the Sony disks, yes they are better (I only seem to scrap 2-3 before I get a good one), but I still AM making stuttering freak shows.
          <o></o>
          <o></o>
For kicks I took a –R disc and ran the exact same image and that I have using to test since my first post and it works flawlessly! I have mounted this image file and viewed it, it too plays perfectly, so I’m sure that it is not the image.

          Any other ideas?

the memorex is not a quality product, so any test with them is worthless,
it might be a bad disk, now do the tests stutter in the computer drives?
If not then your player is picky or bad.

Hey there Chewy. Yes, they stutter in my computer drive as well, not as bad mind you but they do stutter. I have a CyberHome standalone and an RCA DVD/VCR combo and these disks perform the same in them all. I have even taken them to my in-laws and/or friends and they do the same thing on their standalones.

Once again I am at a loss. I have not added anything new to my system, in the way of peripherals, so I am not getting any interferences there. I am down right puzzled as to WHY up until Christmas my +R and -R burns worked great, and now I scrap nearly every +R I make.

              HMMMMMM?????????

I guess you'd better count your blessings it's not screwing up -R disks.

A new burner is cheap, you might want to retire the liteon to being a reader.
