    memorex dvd-r 8x discs

whats the word on these ones? ive heard they got a bad rep. i have dvd -r 8x, not sure which ones exactly. i run them at 4x speed, and was curious if this maybe the problem why they aint being read after burning(refer to http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?t=61752 for my problem).

although i have ripped movies in the past to mpeg format, and burned afterwards with these discs, and no problems. also videohelp.com reports good things about the discs with my burner. LG GSA-4120B.

you'll get mixed reviews on those here. many can't burn them successfully. i use them from time to time and the CMC's have been excellent. recently a 100 spindle of g05's 1 was bad from this well-known crappy media. bottom line though you can do much better for media. i switched to sony.

                Worked OK for me

I have some DVD's copies of tv shows recorded with a Tosheba TV DVD recorder, 8X Memorex worked OK no "coasters", the price is pretty low in USA/Canada so I was a little worried but they must have been from a good plat. Don't remember the media ID, I bought some Maxell DVD-R's that were made in Tiawan and they were RITEK03. Pretty good.

how do you check the media id of a disc?

main reason i got like 70 of these, cause they were on sale for $20 cdn each for a 50 pack.

                        Ack, don't buy Memorex discs.

I usually buy generic discs, and have had very good luck with them. A few days ago I stopped at Best Buy for some DVD+R's. The salesguy said that Memorex discs were on sale, and recommended them---because Memorex was "a brand name" and would certainly be "better quality" than a generic brand.

I told him I'd seen posts around the Web from people who hadn't liked Memorex discs, but he told me not to worry.

Well, I tried four burns with Nero, at 4x, using different source files. Each produced strange messages (e.g. "Can't create DVD boundaries...") and ended with "couldn't finalize" errors. The resulting discs played on my hardware player but not my PC. I've never had that kind of trouble---consistent trouble.

I exchanged the Memorexes for Maxells. (I figured I deserved them.) They've burned perfectly.

                        Buyer beware.

I have walked into Walmart, Staples, Future Shop and asked the same question.

These sales people try to teach you wrong facts because it is their job to sell NOT know the truth. I have sent emails to FS and they do not even reply to them. That is why I buy Verbatims. I know what I am getting by looking at where they are manufactured!!

As a joke, I always ask for TYs or Taiyo Yudens. This is where it gets funny. A lot just say "duh?"

But in my travels, I have only found 1 other person (outside this forum) know what TYs are. The reason is he burns copies of his own DVDs and he sent me here for info. He also repairs and upgrades computers for a living. He installed my first burner BTW. He always recommends to his customers MIJ Sonys DVD-Rs. He knows then his customers will get good burns and come back for repeat business!

On the serious side, what is your time worth? Pay now and have a good product or save 50 cents and spend another 2 hours doing it all over again (on another disc)!
