I personally would recommend +R/RW media. You can booktype a DVD+R to DVD-ROM. A booktyped DVD+R will play in virtually any DVD player, as the player thinks they are originals.

Your drive has to support booktyping though. Modified firmware is your best bet to accomplish that.

What kind of drive do you have?

      Can you give more details?

What burner/firmware and what brand of media do you use?

Memorex are not good media. Sony are better, but I suggest you to use verbatim media (not pearl white series).

If your standalone is too picky, try to change booktype in ROM. If your burner support this function, you can change booktype with dvd decrypter or with cd-dvd speed.

What speed you burned these media?

how old is the burner and are there any other numbers on it?

that firmware doesn't quite match up.

anyways that's a good burner, make sure you have made in japan 8x media,
it burns dvd-r very well with updated firmware(driver) and make sure it's connected to a usb2 port and burn at 4x only (and leave the computer alone during the burn)

if someone can verify it's a nec 3500, I would flash with modded firmware for bittsetting
