If it freezes and skips in my standalone player, it will do the same on my computer. Yesterday, my backup froze during play. I reburned it onto another disc and the second backup plays fine. So maybe I have some bad media mixed in with the good ones? If my burner was going bad, then wouldn't it make all of my discs unplayable?

where did the tyg02's come from?
and do the files that you backed up on the hard drive play fine?
          not the disks you burned

I got them from RIMA. Here's the link to the actual discs that I'm currently using which are giving me trouble (I bought 200 of them in November):

The files play fine on the hard drive.

Well they(rima) are as good as it gets, and I have never heard of this problem
with Taiyo Yuden media, they make the most consistent disks.
              I suspect it's your burner.

I downloaded a utility from Sony that tests the drive's read/write ability. It says I passed and everything is fine.

I also checked what media my particular burner supports. Taiyo Yuden is one of the recommended medias. But it says this next to it:

                _________________________________________________

Disc manufacturers and discs certified for operation with the DVD/CD rewritable drive DRU-710A is:

                Taiyo Yuden Co., Ltd. -----------------------
Disc labeled for use at 8x speed

                _________________________________________________

Does this mean I should burn at 8x instead of 4x?

Well at this point your guess is a good as anybody's, one thing I would try is
a reflash of the latest firmware, it's rare but firmware can become corrupt?

let's try BYX5 and let's do it in SAFE mode.

                    Hi GooGoo,

SELL your SONY Burner or give it away. Then go to NewEgg.com and Buy either a BenQ DW-1640 OEM or an NEC 3540 (or something like that) ... read up on the review on these 2 at various site and decide for yourself ... BUT I would go with BenQ.

Then use Taiyo Yuden any speed 4x or 8x or whatever ... I would stay away from Verbatims also even though they say they are good media ... they seem not to be very consistent in their manufacturing lately!!!

Also, DVD Shrink or DVD Decrypt depending on your situation ... I would suggest into .ISO first ... then use DVDD or ImgBurn to burn the ISO at 4X ... like you have ...

                    Good Luck!

Thanks again for the tips and suggestions. I'm going to lay off the BYX5 firmware for now. But I will definitely try your suggestion should the problem continue.

I had a feeling that my burner was dying and I actually started looking at some of the burners available. NEC was one of them. I was also thinking about getting a Plextor or a SONY DRU-810A. The 810A are pretty cheap now. I think Amazon is selling it for under $60.

                          Hi GooGoo & Chewy,

Chewy, I noticed that you steering Goo toward a NEC (which is great) and LG. I have never used LG, so I cannot comment on it. Chewy, do you like LG's?

                          GooGoo:
                          1) I am not sure what your obsession is with SONY ... I would stay away from Sony drives simply because I DO NOT trust Sony when they bundle all kind of Junk with their CD's, DVD's and everything else.
                          2) If you go to CDRLabs.com you will see both Sony DU-810 and Plextor PX740A are based on BENQ DW1640 technology ... basically they are Re-Badged BenQ product ... why pay the Extra Dollar for the Sony or Plextor names.
If you can not get DW-1640 form NewEgg ... then I guess I would get it thru Plextor first before I go with Sony.
Also, my recommendation would be get an INTERNAL DVD burner vs. External.

                          Gonwk!~

                            Thanks Chewy!

One question about the NEC ND-3550A. They mention in your link that the 3550A uses no lead in its components. Should I be worried about this? Is it important to have?

                            @ Gonwk:

I like SONY because I've had good experiences with their products and support. But as much as I like them, I have no problem with trying out other manufacturers. If it's affordable and very reliable then I will buy it regardless of who makes them. I can't believe how cheap (price-wise) DVD burners have gotten over the past year! You can get a good burner for under $40!

lg's are the best burners, fast/good/bitsett out of the box! they don't rip fast or scan
nec's are almost as good, but they rip faster(especially with modded firmware)
and have to use modded firmware to bitset, but they can scan

now benq's(1620/40/50) are great burners, good rippers and great scanners!
however the 1650 isn't available yet at a decent price, in a few weeks maybe
