    DVD+R D/L Burning not working?

Hello, my burner is new (Samsung external drive: TS-E552U, http://www.samsungoms-europe.com/sam...2U&group=multi), and having first used it with DVDShrink i foudn everyone here really helpful in getting me started with it - Thanks again!!

Now the next problem. I want to copy alot of .mp3 files as data onto a DVD+R double layer disc (Verbatim x8, 8.5Gb) My drive, as above should support this media, the firmware is updated to the latest version (V10 i think it was) but when i pop the disc into the drive it just sits there flashing its light as if it's wondering what the hell the disc is? How come?
The Burning software i have (Which came with it) is Nero Startsmart. Is there a setting in there somewhere perhaps under NeroInfo Tool which needs changing?

Having now burned a whole load of 4.7Gb DVD's using DVD Shrink with success after updating the Firmware etc, i expected this to work last night, i'm lost? Please help, ta.

Just thought of something, the drive says it supports:

    DVD+R Double Layer : 4x

But i bought a DVD+R Double Layer: 8x, could this be the problem? Again, from Verbatim

The drive should be able to fallback to the slower speed. How long have you allowed this drive to sit once initiating the record command? I find it hard to believe your drive would have problems with Verbatims.

Your drive has an option called S.A.T. which is supposed to, I think, mimic what the Plextors do, which is form a write strategy for unknown media. If your drives firmware doesn't have the media ID imbedded the recorder may be doing a pre-scan of the media prior to the burn. This is why I ask how long you have waited before aborting the record process. The 'just sitting there flashing the light' is what is making me lean towards this direction. Assuming there are no errors I would just let it sit there for a while (an hour would be more than enough) and see what happens.

Please get back with us and let us know your progress.

      Regards,

Thanks for replying, in fact i never initiated the Burn Process, as soon as i put the disc in (It's a brand new one) and off the drive goes, chattering away flashing the LED, i assume trying to work out what's going on?

I will try again tonight and even leave the drive 'chattering' for a while, i'll report back tomorrow, thanks.

Well, i tried it last night and let the player sits there with the disc in, it didn't help, didn't even communicate with my laptop. In fact when i plugged in the USB plug into the Laptop, the Laptop froze too? I guess it is a bad quality Verbatim disc, i will try another brand and type and see what happens. The disc is in the bin now.

                How to find media ID.

They don't put the media ID on the package so look for made in Japan DVD+R DL 4X.

FAQ: How to find out your media ID code and firmware version Many issues concerning DVD copying have to do with the media you use and your firmware version. Here's a super easy way of determining both in one step. 1. Pop a blank disk in your DVD writer 2. Open ImgBurn (www.imgburn.com) and go to Write mode

Good idea Soup (I'd give greens but it tells me to spread it around first). I always say Verbs and TY but I remember the wise ones saying "or anything made in Japan".

Well all, i bought a new Verbatim DVD+R DL 8.5Gb disc, this time a 2.4x speed. Put it into the drive on the weekend, no flashing light on the front so looked good, problem was, my MP3's were not quiet ready for burning!!! So last night, put the disc in again, flash, flash, flash...............for ever!!!!! But this time, unlike last, it did at least recognise the disc and with Nero Disc info saying disc space etc etc. BUT, when i went to burn through Nero, it said, "not enough space on the target disc" even though i was well below the 8.5GB, around 7.8Gb i think.

So that's it - i give up, it's going back to the shop and i'm not buying this a bloody Samsung External drive again!!!!

Thanks for all your help though, when i get my new drive i'll post an update.

one thing i just thought of, when i check my file size of the MP3's i wish to burn onto the DL DVD (Just doing 'right click' & properties in Explorer), it says:

Size: 8.04GB and in brackets (8,638,851,803 bytes)
Size on Disc: 8.04GB (8,639,918,080 bytes)
                          Contains 1'258 Files, 108 Folders.

Is the number in Brackets to large, should this number be below: 8,500,000,000 (Which i assume is 8.5GB)

Perhaps that's why Nero said the disc has to little space?

                          or???
